Triple H Confirms Raw Will No Longer Be Censored When It Moves To Netflix
WWE programming moving between channels and networks is nothing new. Whenever a deal ends, WWE negotiates a new one and sometimes that means Raw or SmackDown will start airing somewhere else. The next of those shifts is going to be bigger than usual, though. From January 2025, Raw will air on Netflix, the first time in WWE history that its flagship show will be shown live in the same place at the same time no matter where you are in the world, and that's not the only thing that'll be different.
Triple H was a guest on The Pat McAfee Show on Monday and while on the show, WWE's head of creative was asked about what differences fans can expect once Raw moves to Netflix. One of the biggest changes Triple H noted was a lack of censorship from the platform (H/T to WrestleZone).
Right now, just as an example of us being on Fox, if the crowd chants ‘Holy sh**,’ or something much worse, they just take that audio. Sometimes they take the picture and the audio off, and it’s just black screen... We won’t have those issues with Netflix. The ability to be live globally, the ability to have everything seen all at once everywhere, it’s a game-changing moment.
With WWE putting Raw on Netflix next year, does it mean other wrestling companies like AEW will move to streaming as well?
What prompted Triple H to discuss censorship in WWE was McAfee mentioning The Rock. There was quite a bit of controversy during Rock's return run earlier this year as the WWE board member appeared to be above the rules. Swearing on TV, and even more in his social media promos, The Game noted on the McAfee Show that Rock does what he wants, and it was up to USA to censor what he was saying if the network decided that was necessary.
Triple H alluded to what other changes need to be considered when comparing what Raw looks like now to how it will look on Netflix. Not just fewer restrictions, particularly when it comes to using bad language, but also how long the show will be, how commercials will work, and whether there will be breaks at all. With other streaming services, like Amazon Prime, introducing ads, although The Game didn't elaborate, perhaps ads will remain on Raw when it moves to Netflix. That's a lot of extra time to fill if they're not.
Even though SmackDown and NXT will remain on regular networks in the US when Raw moves to Netflix, its other shows, and the rest of WWE's content, will be coming to the streaming platform in other parts of the world. Although it was replaced by Peacock a while ago in the US, the WWE Network will be shut down for good at the end of 2024 as everything on it will move to Netflix outside of the US starting in January 2025. That means everything WWE including its PLEs and all of its weekly shows will be available on Netflix outside of the US starting next year.
