57% of Gaza's farmland destroyed as 96% face hunger, UN
ALBAWABA - According to a joint assessment released in June by the UN's agriculture and satellite imaging agencies, FAO and UNOSAT, 57% of Gaza's farmland has suffered destruction since the Israeli aggression on the besieged strip started.
According to AFP, which cites Matieu Henry of the Food and Agriculture Organization, this destruction puts Gaza's food sovereignty in jeopardy given that 30% of the territory's sustenance is reliant on agricultural produce.
In 2022, the Gaza Strip supplied $44.6 million worth of produce in 2022, primarily to the West Bank and Israel, according to FAO data, with the number falling to zero since the start of the Israeli aggression which killed over 38,098 Palestinians according to the health ministry.
This is our farm in northern #Gaza before and after an Israeli warplane hit it. Here I quarantined to escape the virus, but it’s not the best place to take shelter from bombings. The north of the Palestinian territory has suffered a greater extent, with 68 percent of its agricultural land destroyed; nevertheless, the southern region, which includes sections of Al-Mawasi, has seen the greatest rise in damage the past few months as a result of Israeli military attacks, AFP reports.
This evaluation of the Israeli harm done to the agricultural land is reported as the hunger monitoring system of the United Nations determined in June that 96 percent of Gaza is experiencing severe cases of acute food insecurity.
“As soon as the Israeli bulldozers and tanks entered the area, they began bulldozing cultivated lands with various trees, including fruits,” 34-year-old farmer Ibrahim Dheir explains to AFP as he suffers from the loss of all of his agricultural equipment and 20 dunams, or five acres, of land he had leased, adding that “we used to depend on agriculture for our livelihood day by day, but now there's no work or income.”
