Kano Emirate Tussle: Traditional Flag Hoisted At Nassarawa Mini Palace

Leadership 3 days ago

Amid the protracted tussle over the Kano Emirate throne, the traditional and official flag was hoisted at the Nassarawa mini palace at 6 am on Thursday.

This act tends to reaffirm the authority of the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, who currently occupies the palace.

LEADERSHIP reports the flag is a symbol of authority and legitimacy of the Emir that is traditionally raised every morning at 6 am and lowered at 6 pm.

It also signifies the presence of the emir and remains down when he is officially outside the palace or traveling.

Kano has been thrown into controversy following repeal of the Kano Emirates Council Law by the Kano House of Assembly, followed swiftly with the dethronement of Bayero by Governor Abba Yusuf as the Emir of Kano.
Additionally, the governor reversed the creation of four new emirates of Bichi, Rano, Karaye, and Gay and dismissed the emirs appointed by his predecessor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

The Kano Emirate dispute continues to see both Aminu Ado Bayero and the 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II laying claim to the throne.

Despite the ongoing legal proceedings, both emirs occupy their respective palaces and perform all traditional and royal rites.

This dual claim has led to a protracted conflict with neither side willing to cede ground.
