WORKS by the man said to be the UK’s richest artist are to go on display in Jersey from tomorrow.

The Butterfly Empress exhibition at the JARO Gallery in York Street features prints by Turner Prize-winning artist Damien Hirst.

The 59-year-old conceptual artist, who dominated the creative scene in the UK during the 1990s, became famous for a series of artworks in which dead animals – including a shark, a sheep and a cow – were preserved in formaldehyde.

He is reportedly the United Kingdom’s richest living artist, with his wealth estimated at $384 million, according to the Sunday Times Rich List 2020.

His new collection explores themes of freedom, religion, life and death through kaleidoscope-like patterns and butterfly imagery.

They were produced by the artist in collaboration with London-based art and technology company Heni in early 2022.

The St Helier gallery will also display Hirst’s circular spin paintings, which are known for their splashes of colour.

His work will be exhibited alongside local artist Bluntroller, and two London-based artists, Mr Controversial and Opake.

The exhibition will be at JARO Gallery from 6 July to 9 August.
