National Dog Day may not be until Aug. 26, but it’s never to early for readers to show appreciation for pooches of all breeds.

New research from Showsight Magazine that analyzed search data by state found that Bernese Mountain Dogs are the most popular dog breed in 10 states, including Massachusetts. This breed is especially popular in northern states because it is well-suited for colder climates.

Doing some research of our own, we asked readers to let us know what breed of dog they own and what they love about that breed. Reader responses ranged from simple descriptions of their personalities to fun stories about their pets.

Below, read about readers’ favorite dog breeds and what they love about them.

Some quotes have been lightly edited for clarity. Some of the photos used below are reader-submitted from previous call-outs.

Australian Shepherd

Previously submitted by reader Amanda K. of Chelmsford.

“Intelligence is the #1 trait we love about our 2-year-old Australian Shepherd, Nova. He is always learning and figuring things out — like words we use, things we say, etc. It’s like having a young child where you have to ‘spell things out’ so they won’t get overexcited! This breed is high energy, yet adaptable if needed. Loyalty to the ‘family’ is very strong. If he’s unsure of a situation or person, he will stand firmly by our side (maybe a few barks to make his presence known), but he’s not aggressive. He also sleeps in the weirdest positions — especially upside down, on his back, legs extended and spread wide open for the world to see!”

Dachsund

“Their personalities range from affectionate to independent. The personalities span the spectrum. They’re great travel companions, often curious about the world around them, unlike some other breeds. They were bred to hunt for badgers, so they have that drive, too — that adds to the curiousness. Dachshunds are known for their stubbornness, too, though, but it’s part of their charm. Sometimes during walks, every one of them will ‘put on the brakes.’ They love to pose for pictures, and are amenable to dressing up for Halloween, too. Two of our three Dachshunds enjoy doing agility, and they love being kept busy and can be very affectionate. There is no dog more loyal, more fiercely defensive than a dachshund.”

English Springer Spaniel

“Looks, personality, athleticism, loyalty, trainability, intelligence.”

Ruston E., East Bridgewater

“I have an English Springer Spaniel and a Brittany [Spaniel.] Sporting dogs are energetic and enthusiastic but are also great companions. They want to be with you at all times. They don’t care about rain or snow and they get you out for walks regardless of the weather. They are quick learners and want to please.”

Siberian Husky

“Attitude and energy.”

Lauar, Lunenberg

Standard Poodle

“Standard Poodles get a bad rap from the silly poodle cuts in dog shows. They are the best breed! They are affectionate to the point of being a bit needy for attention. They have goofy personalities and are great family dogs. Poodles are very smart and are easily trained. In addition, they don’t shed! I would highly recommend Standard Poodles to anyone!”

Holly O., Five Islands, ME

White German Shepherds

“We love everything about this breed. First off, they are show stoppers. They are loyal, loving, affectionate, athletic, graceful, and so smart and intuitive. I couldn’t live without these amazing dogs by my side.”
