Queen Camilla popped in pink at the U.K.'s national event commemorating the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Landings, prompting a look into the choice of the surprising shade for such a service.

The Queen, 76, was unmissable in a pale pink coat dress with a matching hat next to King Charles and Prince William amid a sea of guests in dark suits and military uniforms at the D-Day remembrance in Portsmouth, England, on June 5.

While women in the royal family often wear black or other dark colors for military-related memorial events such as Remembrance Sunday each November, there are a few reasons why Queen Camilla may have gone in a different direction.

It's possible that the royal chose the outfit in tribute to her plans tomorrow. On June 6, King Charles, Queen Camila and Prince William are set to step out in Normandy, France, to continue commemorations for the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Landings, a visit significant as the King's first trip overseas since the palace announced his cancer diagnosis in February. Queen Camilla's pink Fiona Clare coat dress with coordinating Philip Treacy beret already has a connection to the country — it's the outfit she wore as she arrived for the state visit to France in Sept. 2023 with King Charles.

The Queen made the fashion statement when she and King Charles stepped off the plane at Orly Airport, kicking off their three-day visit to France with President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte. She accessorized with a four-strand pearl necklace with diamond clasp (one of several of the style in her jewelry box) and wore the same necklace again on June 5.

The late Queen Elizabeth was known to wear bright colors at large-scale events in order to be easily found in the crowd, perhaps inspiring her daughter-in-law to do the same.

Queen Camilla wasn't the only one who wore the upbeat color at the D-Day anniversary event. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's wife, Akshata Murty, also wore pale pink, and actress Helen George sported a hot pink dress (reminiscent of an ensemble in Kate Middleton's closet) when she hit the stage at Southsea Common.

Queen Camilla had tears in her eyes during the D-Day commemorative event in Portsmouth, where she, King Charles and Prince William joined veterans to remember the sacrifices made in the massive military campaign that changed the course of World War II. The royals had the chance to meet veterans at the service, where William, 41, was asked about how his wife Princess Kate is doing amid her cancer treatment.

When a veteran asked William if Kate was "getting better," he reportedly responded, "She'd have loved to be here."

The Princess of Wales, 42, has kept a low profile since announcing on March 22 that she was diagnosed with cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy. Her last public royal outing was on Christmas Day when she walked to church with Prince William and their kids Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis at Sandringham.

Though she has been outside of the spotlight, sources tell PEOPLE that Princess Kate has recently been spotted out with her family and solo running errands.
