‘Between India And Pakistan’: US Evades Question On Troubled Relations Between Neighbours Amid Growing Terrorism

The United States has steered clear of commenting on the bilateral ties between India and Pakistan while reiterating its stance against terrorism. The US stated that while it supports any country that stands against terrorism, the issue is ultimately a matter for the two neighbouring nations to resolve.

The statements came during a media briefing on Monday, where the official addressed a question about the US' stance on the complex relationship between the US, India, and Pakistan.

Vedant Patel, the Principal Deputy Spokesperson for the US Department of State, reaffirmed the country's position on terrorism, stating that the US hopes all nations worldwide will condemn terrorism wherever it occurs.

Patel expressed that Washington supports efforts by countries to improve relations with their neighbours. “We would hope that any country on the face of the planet condemns terrorism anywhere, but ultimately, this is between India and Pakistan. Broadly, we welcome any countries making more positive relations with their neighbours,” said Patel.

Patel also emphasised that the US is deepening relations with India in several key areas. "India is a country with which we are deepening our relations across a number of key areas, especially in terms of economic ties and security cooperation," he said.

He added that President Biden "had the opportunity to briefly see Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi on the margins of the G7 a couple of weeks ago."

He further stated, "We will keep working on strengthening this relationship." Patel highlighted that the US hosted Prime Minister Modi for a state visit last year and expressed his expectation for further enhanced cooperation. During Modi's visit to the US in June, at President Biden's invitation, the two nations signed numerous significant agreements in defence, trade, and space cooperation.
