Opal Lee Leads Texans in Commemorating Juneteenth with Walk

Dancers and drummers led a massive crowd in a 2.5-mile walk at the African American Museum in Fair Park to celebrate Juneteenth, commemorating the emancipation proclamation reaching Texas. The Grandmother of Juneteenth, 97-year-old activist Opal Lee, led hundreds of North Texans in a walk to honor freedom on this significant day. Lee emphasized the importance of Juneteenth, stating that while July 4th freed the land, Juneteenth freed the people. Eight years ago, at 89 years old, Lee embarked on a journey from Fort Worth to Washington, D.C., walking 2.5 miles every day for two-and-a-half years to symbolize the wait of Black Texans for the message of emancipation after Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. In 2021, President Joe Biden designated Juneteenth as a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery post-Civil War. Lee was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor, by Biden at the White House, recognizing her mission to preserve history. Despite her accomplishments, Lee continues her contributions by spearheading the National Juneteenth Museum's establishment in Fort Worth's historic South Side neighborhood, slated to open next Juneteenth. Mya Lewis, the museum's executive assistant, expressed excitement for the museum to serve as a hub honoring Juneteenth's legacy and the underprivileged community in the South Side. Residents like 74-year-old Carolyn Maxine expressed gratitude for Lee's advocacy, acknowledging that Juneteenth became a federal holiday, granting them a day off work, thanks to Lee's dedication. Jamie Reynolds, a Black woman from South Dallas, stressed the need for increased education and awareness about Juneteenth's history and significance, comparing it to the remembrance of events like the Holocaust to prevent the recurrence of such atrocities. Reynolds highlighted the importance of preserving and discussing history to prevent its repetition. KERA's Zara Amaechi contributed to this report.
