500 kg in a day: Dragon fruit pursuit defies Kerala govt-run chemical company's troubled history

Travancore Titanium Products Limited (TTPL), a Public Sector Unit owned by the State Government of Kerala, is receiving praise for a new venture diverging from its original pursuit—dragon fruit production. According to a video on the Facebook page of Kerala government’s Farm Information Bureau (FIB), cultivation in TTPL’s campus is capable of yielding 400 to 500 kg of dragon fruits daily.

The harvest is sold both within TTPL's campus and externally, available in 1 kg, 2 kg, and 4 kg packs.

It may be noted that TTPL’s reputation has been marred several times by financial losses, irregularities, corruption charges, job fraud, and adverse environmental impacts. However, this dragon fruit production initiative has been garnering appreciation.

More about the company:
Travancore Titanium Products Limited (TTPL) is a Public Sector Unit owned by the State Government of Kerala. It is the pioneer company in Southeast Asia producing Anatase Grade titanium dioxide. Established in 1946, commercial operations began in 1950 with a capacity of 5 MT per day. The company adheres to BIS 411:2020 standards for quality assurance.

Dragon fruit cultivation in Kerala:
Dragon fruit, once exclusively imported into the Kerala market, is now locally produced. Initially lacking demand, this Mexican fruit has gained popularity over the years. Domestic production has increased, with many households in Kerala now cultivating it for personal use. Notably, the hybrid variety of dragon fruit plants produced in Kerala is attracting interest from other states, with cultivators even receiving export inquiries.
