It's important to remember the ongoing controversial statements by the creator of the Harry Potter franchise. In the Harry Potter universe, Lord Voldemort's Death Eaters were a dangerous group of dark wizards who carried out the bidding of their Dark Lord. These Death Eaters mostly came from families with high status for their magical blood purity, joining Voldemort in an effort to oppress wizards of muggle (non-magical people) heritage.
Voldemort had many Death Eaters at his command, including lesser known characters like Corban Yaxley, Thorfinn Rowle, Avery, Crabbe and Goyle, as well as major characters like Igor Karkaroff, Peter Pettigrew, and Severus Snape, who worked as a double agent for Albus Dumbledore. There are several Death Eaters in the Harry Potter universe who had substantial backstories, much of which did not make it into the film adaptations.
While Nott is never mentioned or seen in the Harry Potter movies, he was one of Voldemort's first Death Eaters. Nott was the father of Theodore Nott, a friend of Draco Malfoy and classmate of Harry Potter. Nott's most significant act was the creation of the Sacred Twenty-Eight directory, which listed all the English wizarding families he considered to be completely pure-blooded.
Nott was present when Voldemort returned to full power in Goblet of Fire and took part in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries in Order of the Phoenix. He was present for the Battle of Hogwarts in Deathly Hallows and was likely sent to Azkaban following the fall of Voldemort. His son plays a role in the Cursed Child play, being arrested for being in possession of an illegal time-turner.
Many casual Harry Potter fans might be surprised to learn that Bellatrix Lestrange was married during the events of the Harry Potter story. Her husband, Rodolphus, was a Death Eater who took part in the torture of Neville Longbottom's parents, Frank and Alice, resulting in them spending their lives in St. Mungo's Hospital.
Rodolphus was part of the mass breakout from Azkaban during Order of the Phoenix, participating in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries. He fought in the Battle of the Seven Potters in Deathly Hallows and was sent to Azkaban after the Battle of Hogwarts. In the Cursed Child play, Rodolphus escapes from Azkaban yet again to tell his daughter, Delphini, that she was actually the daughter of Lord Voldemort, setting the events of the play in motion.

In the Wizarding World, age works very differently than Muggles. But from Dumbledore to Snape, how old are some Hogwarts' professors?
Mentioned in the film adaptation of Goblet of Fire, Augustus Rookwood was a Death Eater sent to Azkaban after the First Wizarding War. Rookwood worked in the Department of Mysteries but acted as a spy for Voldemort, keeping him updated on Ministry of Magic information.
Rookwood was arrested after Igor Karkaroff reported him while on trial but escaped in 1996 during the events of Order of the Phoenix. Rookwood served Voldemort during the Second Wizarding War, finally being defeated by Aberforth Dumbledore (brother of Albus Dumbledore) during the Battle of Hogwarts at the end of Deathly Hallows. It is unclear whether he was killed by Aberforth or simply detained and sent to Azkaban.
Amycus and Alecto Carrow were a pair of sibling Death Eaters who served under Lord Voldemort. They were present in the Astronomy Tower on the night of Albus Dumbledore's death and were appointed Hogwarts Professors two months later during Deathly Hallows. Amycus taught Dark Arts, having students practice the Cruciatus Curse on first-year students. Alecto was appointed as Muggle Studies professor after the death of Professor Charity Burbage, turning the class into a space for anti-muggle messaging.
The siblings were defeated a few hours before the Battle of Hogwarts, with Alecto being stunned by Luna Lovegood in the Ravenclaw common room. Amycus was defeated shortly after by Minerva McGonagall, with the two being detained in Ravenclaw Tower. It is likely both were sent to Azkaban after the fall of Voldemort.
Antonin Dolohov is one of those Harry Potter characters that casual fans may not know but took part in several significant events. During the First Wizarding War, he aided in the murder of Gideon and Fabian Prewett. (brothers of Molly Weasley) He was part of the mass breakout from Azkaban in Order of the Phoenix and participated in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, managing to knock out Hermione Granger.
In Deathly Hallows, he attacks Harry, Hermione and Ron Weasley in a muggle diner, having his memory altered after the duel. Dolohov was present for the Battle of Hogwarts, where he murdered Remus Lupin. He was eventually defeated by Professor Flitwick, though it is unclear whether he was killed or simply detained for arrest.
Lestrange might be one of the most infamous names in Harry Potter, but how much do we really know about the old wizarding family?
Brother to Rodolphus and brother-in-law to Bellatrix, Rabastan Lestrange was a Death Eater who fought in both the First and Second Wizarding Wars. He was first seen in the pensieve memory scene of Goblet of Fire as one of the Death Eaters on trial for the torture of Frank and Alice Longbottom. He was sent to Azkaban but later broke out alongside his brother and sister-in-law.
He appears again in Order of the Phoenix during the battle of the Department of Mysteries, where he has his head turned into a baby's head when falling into the enchanted bell jar in the Time Room. It is unknown whether or not Rabastan had his head freed from the enchantment, as he is not mentioned as taking part in any of the battles in Half-Blood Prince or Deathly Hallows.
While he is never seen in the series proper, Evan Rosier was a Death Eater who played a significant part in the First Wizarding War. It can be assumed that he is related Druella Rosier, the mother of Bellatrix Lestrange, Andromeda Tonks and Narcissa Malfoy. During the First Wizarding War, Rosier was killed by Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody, with Moody even mentioning that he sustained major injuries from the duel, losing part of his nose.
During Igor Karkaroff's trial (seen in Goblet of Fire's pensieve memory) he names Evan Rosier as a well-known member of wizarding society who was secretly working for Voldemort. Barty Crouch then says that Rosier had already been revealed as a Voldemort supporter and was killed, making Karkaroff's information useless to the Wizengamot court.
The Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts introduced Leta Lestrange as an ancestor to Bellatrix, but their connection is murkier than people realize.
Bellatrix Lestrange is probably the most well-known and iconic Death Eater in Harry Potter. Perfectly brought to life by Helena Bonham-Carter in the films, Bellatrix was the daughter of Cygnus Black and Druella Rosier and a devoted supporter of Voldemort. Bellatrix was introduced in Order of the Phoenix as one of the Death Eaters who tortured the Longbottoms. During the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, she kills her cousin, Sirius Black.
In Half-Blood Prince, Bellatrix infiltrates Hogwarts with the help of her nephew, Draco Malfoy, and is present for the murder of Albus Dumbledore. Bellatrix is seen several times throughout Deathly Hallows, taking part in the Battle of the Seven Potters and the skirmish at Malfoy Manor. She is finally defeated and killed in Deathly Hallows by Molly Weasley, after killing her niece, Nymphadora Tonks, earlier in the Battle of Hogwarts, In the Cursed Child, it is revealed that she gave birth to the daughter of Voldemort at some point in Deathly Hallows.
Lucius Malfoy is the first Death Eater introduced in the Harry Potter series as an antagonistic figure in the Chamber of Secrets. The son of Abraxas Malfoy and father of Draco, Lucius was a follower of Voldermort during both the First and Second Wizarding Wars. While he maintained high status in the Death Eater ranks, his failure to retrieve the prophecy in Order of the Phoenix made him a disappointment in Voldemort's eyes.
After the climax of Order of the Phoenix, Lucius is sent to Azkaban, but breaks out again in Deathly Hallows, appearing in the Battle of the Seven Potters, the skirmish at Malfoy Manor and the Battle of Hogwarts. While the films show Lucius and his family retreating from the battle of Harry survives Voldemort's killing curse, it was revealed on Pottermore that Malfoy was sent to Azkaban following the fall of Voldemort.
Regulus Black is probably one of the most popular Death Eater characters, with the least information known about him. Regulus never appears in the series, rather mentioned by other characters as being the brother of Sirius Black. After his time at Hogwarts, Regulus became a Death Eater. After learning of Voldemort's horcruxes from the house-elf, Kreacher, Regulus betrays his master, going to the cave seen at the end of Half-Blood Prince to replace the Slytherin locket Horcrux with a fake.
Regulus was killed in the cave by the inferi after successfully swapping out the lockets. At the end of Half-Blood Prince, Harry discovers that the fake locket contained a note from the mysterious R.A.B., which is revealed to be Regulus Arcturus Black in Deathly Hallows.
The Harry Potter franchise follows the adventure of a young boy introduced a whole new world of magic, mayhem and darkness. Traversing the obstacles in his path, young Harry's rise to heroics pits him against Lord Voldemort, one of the most dangerous wizards in the world and all his minions.
