Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) has been recognized as a "Grief-Sensitive" school division and has been granted $37,500 to assist children and teenagers coping with the loss of a friend, neighbor, or family member.

Grant Awarded to Aid Struggling Students
After all 75 Virginia Beach Schools had crisis teams undergo training to help young students facing grief, the New York Life Foundation awarded the grant to VBCPS. This initiative aims to provide essential support to students during challenging times.

Empowering Students in Times of Grief
Robert Jamison, the executive director of Student Support Services at VBCPS, emphasized that no student should feel isolated in their struggles. He stated, "Anyone who is struggling or feels as if what they are feeling is different or that no one else is there to help them, that is just simply not the case. It's up to us to uplift them and show them that no one is alone."

Addressing the Impact of Grief on Students
Research from the JAG Institute reveals that approximately 1 in 12 children will experience the loss of a parent or sibling before turning 18. If left unaddressed, unresolved grief can lead to academic challenges, mental health issues, and even premature mortality.

Enhancing Support Systems
The grant funds will be utilized to enhance VBCPS's bereavement plans and facilitate continuous staff development. By strengthening crisis teams and implementing proactive support measures, the school division aims to ensure that every student receives the assistance they need during times of adversity.

If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health concerns or approaching a crisis point, remember that help is just a call away. Simply dial 988, and a trained professional will provide the support needed. Remember, you are not alone.
