Those curtains you just bought on sale will look great in your living room. But what if you have no rod to hang them with, don’t have the space to place a rod or if you live in a rental apartment or condo and aren’t allowed to install a rod? No need to panic, say home pros. To learn how to hang curtains without a rod — you’ll be surprised to find that there are some creative, low-cost and easy ways to do it — keep reading.

How to hang curtains without a rod: Use command hooks

Known for their stickiness and easy removal, command hooks are a great alternative when you need to hang curtains. Siobhan Alvarez-Borland, DIY and lifestyle expert at Mimosas and Motherhood, says you’ll need a ton of the hooks, a pencil, a measuring tool and curtain clips.

1. Measure and mark where you want the curtains to hang.

“Use a pencil to lightly mark the spots on your wall,” says Alvarez-Borland. “You want to measure and mark these in a line because basically, you’re creating a rod (because you don’t have one).”

2. Place the Command hooks on the marked spots.

Make sure they are level and evenly spaced out. Alvarez-Borland suggests letting the hooks sit on the wall for at least an hour to ensure that they stick properly.

3. Attach curtain clips to the top edge of your curtains.

“Use one clip for about every six inches of curtain width,” says Alvarez-Borland. “And, then simply hang the curtains by slipping the clips onto the hooks.” You can always adjust the spacing if needed and use tiebacks to place the curtains to the side.

For those who want something more permanent: “Substitute in eye hooks for the Command strips, and then thread picture-hanging wire through them (and use pliers to twist and secure the ends), and then hang the curtain with curtain clips onto the wire,” says Alvarez-Borland.

How to hang curtains without a rod: Try cabinet knobs

While this method may be a little out-of-the-box, cabinet knobs are a cheap alternative to curtain rods. Oftentimes, you can find secondhand options and they’ll bring a bit of uniqueness to your home. If you go for this solution make sure to have a drill, a screwdriver, screws and drywall anchors handy.

1. Decide on the knobs.

You’ll need to pick out the style you want and figure out how many you will need to hang per curtain panel.

2. Measure and mark up the spots.

Figure out how much space you want to have in between each knob and ensure everything is level.

3. Drill pilot holes.

Time to create those holes! Drill them in and use the drywall anchors if you can’t find any of the supporting beams. Screw in the knobs and you’re ready to hang up your curtains.

How to hang curtains without a rod: Try thumbtacks or upholstery tacks

This might not be the best solution if you’re renting since you’ll have to deal with the tiny holes in the wall. However, it’s a quick and easy method that can hold up your curtains when you don’t have a rod.

1. Place the tacks along the top of the window.

Use as many or as little tacks as you’ll need to fully hang the curtains. In a TikTok video from @tikathetoker, she used six tacks on each side of the curtain panels.

If you want it to be more decorative, pull up the curtain to create a little pleat. Use the upholstery tacks when your windows have strong reinforcements and you need some extra support.

According to the brand, their fasteners “are strong enough to hold up to 10 lbs., which means it’s perfect for heavy curtains and lightweight privacy drapes.”
