'I don't want my mum-in-law to see my baby - the nickname she's chosen has really irked me'

A new mum is livid at her mother-in-law for trying to take over as a parental figure and ignoring her wishes - and she's even come up with a 'cringe' grandma name

Welcoming a baby into the world should be a magical experience, but sometimes other people in your life can end up ruining it for the new parents.

One mum has said she's sick to death of her mother-in-law's behaviour since bringing home her baby four months ago, as the other woman keeps trying to muscle her way into being a key parental figure in the little one's life - despite ignoring every boundary the mum and dad have set.

The woman explained things began just two days after she gave birth, when her partner's mum threw a tantrum because she wasn't allowed to immediately see her grandchild. But four months later, the woman's mother-in-law finally came to see the newborn for the first time - and it was a disaster.

In a post on Reddit, the new mum said her mother-in-law - whom she described as an "absolute wretch" - began by declaring that the baby "looks nothing like" her or her partner, and immediately broke several boundaries by refusing to wash her hands before picking up her grandchild and kissing them when she'd been asked not to.

She also reportedly tried "sitting the baby up independently" when they aren't old enough to do that yet, and gave her son a "hard time" when he tried to correct her. What's more, she accused her son and his partner of keeping their child "in a cave" because they didn't allow visitors for the first two months.

But the mum claimed the biggest issue she had with her mother-in-law was the horrible "grandma name" she has demanded her grandchild call her when they're old enough to speak - Marmie.

The mum wrote: "Honestly, I don't give a f**k what this cuckoo lady has to say. She is only hurting her chances of spending time with my child in the future. But what irked me the most from this visit was that she declared her grandma name is 'Marmie'. Not Grandma, Granny, or Nana. She wants to be called MARMIE."

She added that she believes her mother-in-law has chosen this name because it's close to "Mummy", and as most children struggle to pronounce their Rs when they're young, it will sound almost exactly like "Mummy".

"I was just dumbfounded in the moment, but I will be shutting this s**t down," the mum added, "I'm not sure if she thinks I'm too stupid to realise what she's doing or if I just don't have the b**ls to say something."

Commenters on the post were equally baffled by the grandma's behaviour, with many suggesting she come up with another nickname to call her around the baby so the 'Marmie' doesn't stick.

One person said: "Why does every grandmother need a unique grandma name? The charm of these nicknames is that the child picks them, not grandma," while another added: "That's too hard for a baby/toddler to pronounce. She'll end up as 'Me-Me' or something. And once the baby gives your mother-in-law a name (whatever she ends up calling her), it'll stick."
