10 Most Unique Dragon Ball Fighters, Ranked

cbr.com 1 day ago

CBR Anime Week is brought to you by HULU ANIMAYHEM

Dragon Ball has one of the most simple power systems of any Shōnen battle anime, but that doesn't mean all of its fighters engage in combat the same way. While there is no shortage of gods or Saiyans relying primarily on raw power, ki attacks, and martial arts, not everyone fights like Goku and Vegeta.

Possessing unique abilities and fighting styles, powerful Dragon Ball characters like Hit and Majin Buu show their strength in ways beyond firing ki blasts. These characters may not all rank among the strongest in the series, but some boast powers that enable them to defeat any opponent – even if they're millions or billions of times stronger than them.

As the denizens of evil become more powerful in Dragon Ball Super and beyond, Goku will likely need the help of his friends more than ever.

10 Captain Ginyu Steals the Power of Other Fighters

Frieza's Right-Hand Man

Captain Ginyu is among the most mysterious characters in Dragon Ball. Frieza's original right-hand man and the leader of the flamboyant Ginyu Force, Ginyu was introduced with the second-highest power level in the series up until that point, along with the ability to switch bodies with others. Little is known about Ginyu besides his signature move, making it unclear if the main body he appears in is even his original.

Captain Ginyu doesn't simply switch bodies with those stronger than himself, and is willing to severely injure himself before a switch so that his opponent will be left crippled. Outside the Body Change, a technique only known by Captain Ginyu, the Frieza Saga's most memorable mini-boss is notable for his striking of dramatic poses mid-combat for no other reason than he thinks they're cool.

9 Damom Delivered Piccolo's Most Humiliating Defeat

Universe 4's Smallest Nuisance

Universe 4's tiny fighter, Damom, fumes during the Tournament of Power in Dragon Ball Super

The Universe Survival Arc in Dragon Ball Super made the characters' distinct fighting styles a focal point of its story. This is seen both in how the weaker members of Universe 7 navigate the Tournament of Power, and in the unusual techniques utilized by fighters from other universes. Team Universe 4 is among the least impressive in the tournament, but their most unassuming warrior still succeeded in eliminating one of Universe 7's most beloved combatants.

Damom is a tiny Bug person who's almost impossible to see or detect – and who packs far more power than his stature would imply. He takes full advantage of his size and inability to be perceived to knock around his enemies, with him being the one to defeat Piccolo during the Tournament of Power.

The 10 Most Important Dragon Ball Sagas, Ranked

Saga's are Dragon Ball's way of breaking up arcs in its series. From DBZ to Super, many of its best Sagas are also anime's greatest story arcs.

Universe 6's Kale was one of the best additions to Dragon Ball Super, in spite of primarily being a reference to another, far more popular character. Like Broly before her, Kale is the Legendary Super Saiyan, a meek Saiyan who – upon being enraged – taps into a monstrous power only seen once every thousand years. Unlike Broly, whose rage originally stemmed from his hatred of Goku, Kale's stems from her love for Caulifla, and her jealousy over her best friend getting close to other people.

Upon first unlocking her power, Kale becomes a mindless berserker, destroying everything in her path without a second thought. With Caulifla's help, she's quickly able to learn to master this power and fight with both unbelievable strength & her natural intellect. She also has access to Potara Earrings, which she and Caulifla use to fuse into Kefla.

7 Ribrianne Brings Magical Girl Energy to Dragon Ball

Universe 2's Strongest Warrior

Ribrianne after her transformation in Dragon Ball Super.

RIbrianne, known as Brianne de Chateau in her base form, is Dragon Ball Super's pastiche of magical girl anime. She is completely over-the-top in her mannerisms and speeches about love, and this is extended to how she fights. Ribrianne combats her enemies with heart-shaped ki blasts and charge attacks. She traps them in heart-shaped energy bubbles and, with the aid of her friends Kakunsa and Rozie, she can hypnotize them.

When all else fails, Ribrianne transforms into Super Ribrianne, a giant form with immense power. In this form, she fires her arrows of love, and even bigger heart-themed ki blasts. Unfortunately for Ribrianne, these powers weren't enough for her to overcome Android 18.

6 Baby Utilizes the Strength of More Powerful Fighters

The Best Villain in Dragon Ball GT

Baby, in his adult Perfect Form, sad in Dragon Ball GT.

The Baby Arc is widely praised as the sole bright spot of Dragon Ball GT, and the one-of-a-kind threat presented by Baby is a major reason why. An artificial creation of the Tuffles, a scientific people massacred by the Saiyans, Baby was designed to possess the powers he'd need to wipe out all Saiyans in the universe as an act of revenge.

Baby is a parasite, and has the ability to spread himself across the population of entire worlds, taking control of billions of people at the same time. Requiring the strongest possible body to defeat Goku, Baby primarily fights using Vegeta. Controlling Bulma, he has her invent the Blutz Wave Generator, granting him access to a form never seen before or since: the Golden Great Ape.

5 Chiaotzu's Psychic Powers Have Long Been Under Utilized

Where Should New Anime Fans Start With Dragon Ball?

Is the original Dragon Ball anime actually the best place to start if someone is both new to anime and new to the franchise? I watched about 60 episodes (I had them playing in the background) and it never managed to hook me in. I think I might have been better off starting with Dragon Ball Z.

Chiaotzu has been a member of the Dragon Team since the King Piccolo Arc, but he's rarely gotten opportunities to show off his powers, and feel like a part of the group. This is a shame, as Chiatozu possesses more interesting abilities than almost any of his friends. Like Tien Shinhan, Chiaotzu is a student of the Crane School.

Along with learning the school's signature ki attack, the Dodon Ray, he learned how to fly, with him and Tien being the first characters in the franchise to demonstrate the ability to do so. Chiaotzu's true power comes from his psychic techniques, which include telekinesis, telepathy, and the ability to self-destruct. His most handy strategy involves paralyzing his enemies, so that either he or Tien can pummel them.

4 Gotenks' Imagination and Impulsivity Almost Destroyed the World

The Most Fun Saiyan to Watch Fight

Gotenks is formed properly for the first time and points in Dragon Ball Z

Gotenks, the fusion of Goten and Trunks, was born out of necessity, with the sons of Goku and Vegeta the only Saiyans available to learn the Fusion Dance from Piccolo during Super Buu's rampage. This tactic ends up going horribly wrong and endangers the entire universe. While Gotenks possessed the power to defeat Super Buu, his prioritizing being cool and imaginative over being practical led to his defeat. Before being absorbed, however, Gotenks' stupidity provides one of the most entertaining fights in Dragon Ball Z.

The only character besides Goku to achieve Super Saiyan 3, Gotenks not only enjoys fighting in a strang manner, but giving each of his attacks increasingly silly names. He calls his repetitive ki blasts the Continuous Die Die Missile, his Galactic Donut locks his opponents in place, and his Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack involves Gotenks creating semi-sentient ghostly copies of himself, and sending them towards his opponent before they explode. During his fight with Super Buu, Gotenks also uses the Majin as a volleyball, and copies his ability to shout with enough power to shatter dimensions.

The Assassin of Universe 6

Hit looks up in Super Dragon Ball Heroes

Hit is introduced as the strongest fighter from Universe 6, and lives up to his reputation by defeating both Vegeta and Goku in the Tournament of Destroyers. He likely did not have a higher power level than either of the Super Saiyan Gods, but his Time Skip technique made this irrelevant.

Hit can jump ahead 0.5 seconds in time, giving him the opportunity to strike his opponents' vital areas, without them being able to react. The immortal assassin can also access a personal pocket dimension, and freeze his enemies in time. Unlike most other Dragon Ball fighters, Hit is typically calm and collected in fights, not wasting time screaming or making his muscles bigger.

10 DBZ Villains Who Would Still Be a Major Threat in Dragon Ball Super

Goku and Vegeta have gotten far stronger in the interim between DBZ and Super, but some of Z's villains could still put up a fight against them.

Monster Carrot has an interesting place in Dragon Ball's history. Since Yamcha, Oolong, Ox-King, and the Pilaf Gang have all become allies, friends, or family to Goku, this one-episode antagonist is the only villain from Dragon Ball's earliest days to not undergo a redemption arc. This fact is often overshadowed by Monster Carrot having one of the most simple, but completely broken abilities in the franchise: anyone who Monster Carrot touches is turned into a carrot.

Despite being ultimately beaten by an extremely young and weak Goku, Monster Carrot could theoretically defeat any opponent. His power level may be as low as one can be, but there's no evidence that Jiren, Moro, Gas, Black Frieza, or even Zeno would be able to resist being turned into a carrot if touched by the ruthless former mob boss.

1 Majin Buu is an Unpredictable Monster

Impossible to Predict

Between his various forms of Mr. Buu, Evil Buu, Super Buu, and Kid Buu, there is no fighter in Dragon Ball more creative and versatile than Majin Buu. The final antagonist of Dragon Ball Z isn't as popular as Frieza or Cell, but he fights in ways they couldn't even dream of. All versions of Majin Buu are amorphous, shapeshifting demons with near-limitless regenerative abilities.

Each form fights with different mannerisms, suiting their respective personality, with Mr. Buu being jolly and laid-back, but easily enraged, Super Buu being tactical and ruthless, and Kid Buu embodying primal chaos. Buu can absorb other fights to take on their powers and personality traits, fire beams that transform others into sweets like chocolate or cookies, and create massive storms of win by breathing in and exhaling. Super Buu has sole access to the Human Extinction Attack, which killed the majority of Earth's population in seconds, and Kid Buu is the only villain in the franchise to successfully destroy the Earth.
