Tinubu’s government braces for Kenya-style protests
The mass protests in Kenya which forced William Ruto’s government to scrap tax hikes, albeit after 20 citizens lost their lives, have prompted calls for action in several African states. Social media posts have advertised planned demonstrations and shutdowns in Malawi, Uganda and Zimbabwe. Like Kenya, all three are heavily indebted and are raising taxes steeply while their governments are accused of mismanagement and diversion of public funds.
