REPORT: Arsenal Have ‘Aborted Negotiations’ With Napoli As They ‘Believe They Can Sign’ £85M Osimhen Alternative

Arsenal have now made Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres their top target to reinforce the frontline, according to the Correio da Manha.

The Portuguese newspaper claims that the Gunners actually “submitted an offer” for Napoli’s Victor Osimhen but they “aborted negotiations” after it became clear that there was too much of a gap between the two sides’ valuation of the player.

Instead, Mikel Arteta’s side have decided to pursue a deal for Gyokeres. The Swedish international may not be that much cheaper, with Sporting holding out for his release clause, which stands at €100m (£85m).

However, the Correio de Manha reports that Arsenal “believe they can sign” the striker by offering slightly below this figure, and paying the fee in instalments, with add-ons.

Whether this approach will succeed, it remains to be seen but it appears that Gyokeres is now a priority signing.

The club thought they had their new No.9 earlier in the summer

Benjamin Sesko was pursued aggressively by the Gunners last month. It was initially believed that the club had a good chance of snapping up the Slovenian international. Ultimately, though, he snubbed the interest from Arsenal (and Chelsea) to sign a new contract with RB Leipzig instead.

Following a brief flirtation with Osimhen, it looks like they have now switched their attention back to Gyokeres.

Arsenal are currently focused on recruiting other players

Despite the claims about Gyokeres, though, it does seem as if the Gunners are keener on strengthening other areas of the pitch at the moment.

The London club are locked in talks with Bologna about signing Riccardo Calafiori. The Serie A side want as much as €55m (£46.5m) for the Italian international and, if the deal goes through, it would be a surprise if Arsenal’s budget can stretch to sign Gyokeres too
