Varsity education: Female students reveal preference for some courses

Some female senior secondary school students in Lagos State have revealed reasons for their preference for particular courses in the universities.

The female students also told Daily Sun the subject combinations required for such courses and are they are aiming to obtain the necessary grades for admission.
In an interview with SS1 to SS3 students, both art and commercial students told Daily Sun their choice of courses and reasons for their preference.
The interview conducted in schools in Lagos State showed that many female students are afraid to study some courses in the university because they are dominated by male students.
Many of the SS female students interviewed knew the subject combinations for the courses they intend to study in the university.
The outcome revealed that some girls said, due to the financial implication, they can’t study their dream courses. While others said their parents chose courses for them, which they have no interest in for such academic programmes.
Kemi Akinola, 16-year-old SS2 student of Greater Academy International, Isolo, Lagos, said her dream course in the university is Accounting and as a commercial student it remains her focus: “As soon as I entered SS class, I carefully selected subjects that will help me achieve my dream of becoming an Accountant. Next year, in WASSCE, I will write English, Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Accounting, Commerce, Government, Biology and Economics.”
Akinola further explained that, in UTME, she would enter for English, Mathematics, Accounting and Economics but has not made up her mind, which public university to study in.
Rasheed Ayomide, a 14-year-old SS1 student of Groom College, Ejigbo, Lagos, said she would like to study Nursing and acknowledged that females dominate the profession.
Ayomide told the Daily Sun that, to achieve her dream, she would write Biology, Physics, Chemistry, General Mathematics, Further Mathematics, English and two other subjects in the 2026 WASSCE. She disclosed that she picked Nursing because, “I love caring for sick people and my mum wants me to be a nurse.”
A 19-year-old Sarah Sunday, an SS3 student of Paxton College, Agric, Lagos, said she intends to study Computer Science and knows the subject combinations such as English, General Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and other subjects.
Sunday acknowledged that the course is a male dominated field, adding, “I love tech, that is why I want to study the course at the university.”
Florence Okoye, an SS11 student of Noble Secondary School, Egbeda, Lagos, told our Correspondent that from JSS, she made up her mind to study Nursing in a public university and she could not tell if the course/profession is dominated by a particular sex.
“To achieve my ambition, I selected subjects that will aid my dream of studying Nursing. I am taking the following subjects Biology, Chemistry, Physics, General Mathematics, English, Economics, Government and Further Mathematics, adding, ‘’in UTME, I will sit for English, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. I hope to choose a private university because of incessant strikes in public universities.”
For Eze Chiamaka Jessica, a 14-year-old student of Ton-Phil College, Ojo, Lagos, she said she intends to read Business Administration and is aware of the subject combinations. In SS1, she is taking Accounting, General Mathematics, Economics, Marketing, Commerce and Government.
She admitted the course is a male dominated field of study and that girls can do well in the course, “I want to be a businesswoman that is why I will put in for the course.”
Chukwuemeka Chinenye Esther, a 16 year-old student of Elshadai, Ajangbadi, Lagos and in SS111 said she intends to study Engineering and have an idea of the subject combination required for the course.
Chukwuemeka listed the WASSCE subjects to include English, General Mathematics, Physics, Geography and Chemistry.
She acknowledged that the course is a male dominated field and wants to study the course because it is her dad’s wish.
Stella-Maris Akpan, an SS1, 15-year-old student of Saint Michael, Ajangbadi in Ojo, Lagos, disclosed that she wants to study Nursing in the university.
Asked if she knows, the subject combinations for WASSCE, she listed them as; English, General Mathematics, Physics, Biology and Chemistry.
Akpan however stressed that Nursing is not a male dominated course, noting, “no it’s not a male dominated field but a female dominated field. I just love to be a nurse.”
An SS111 student, Chukwuemeka Amarachi Abigail of Star Light International School, Orile, Lagos, said she hopes to study Estate Management.
The 17-year-old female student confirms knowing the subject combinations required to study the course, which are General Mathematics, English, Commerce, Accounting and Geography.
Chukwuemeka explained that the course is for both male and female and hoped to be a real estate manager/agent in the future.
