As the BioShock community waits with bated breath for some kind of announcement regarding the fourth mainline game in the series, fans of the original title may be in luck. Despite releasing in 2007, the original BioShock is still very playable by today's standards even if some aspects haven't stood the test of time. The premise, world-building, and writing remain excellent but technical issues like janky animations and stilted combat often leave players wondering if Irrational Games' monolithic shooter wouldn't benefit from some kind of remake in a similar vein to Dead Space or Resident Evil 2.

Fortunately, that may be in the works as a LinkedIn user (per MP1st) by the name of Brett Shupe, a Motion Capture Animator at 2K, notes in a recent post that since 2022 they've been working on an "upcoming announced remake." That may not be much to go on but taking into consideration the Nvidia 2021 leak which seemingly confirmed that 2K is working on a BioShock RTX remaster, but its possible the project could have pivoted. While nothing has yet been confirmed, the game's community is still excited about the prospect of returning to Rapture.

In the event that the rumors are incorrect and the unannounced remake isn't BioShock, there could be plenty of other options for 2K. One of the most popular requests is the cult-classic shooter The Darkness, a grim tale of revenge and magic inspired by the best-selling comic book. There have also been calls to remake the original Borderlands game with the systems used to bring Borderlands 3 to life; The original looter-shooter has previously been remastered but upgrading the mechanics could make for a fantastic return to Pandora.

If the unannounced game is indeed a BioShock remake, it wouldn't be the first time the classic shooter has been overhauled for modern audiences. In 2016, 2K released BioShock Remastered which was intended to technically improve the experience but ultimately ended up breaking the game. Players complained about the ugly textures, constant bugs, and rampant crashes at launch; while it's become more stable in the years since its release, most prefer playing the original game.

Whatever the case may be, BioShock fans have a great deal to look forward to as 2K confirmed in 2019 that it was beginning work on a fourth game in the series. Nothing has yet been revealed about the project but rumors claim that it will be an open-world experience set in the 1960s. Other reports allege it will feature several familiar faces from Rapture, sparking speculating on how it could be connected to the rest of franchise.
