Summary

  • M. Night Shyamalan's film Trap has had some surprisingly detailed trailer for the otherwise ambiguous M. Night Shyamalan, leading viewers to worry the movie has already been spoiled.
  • Shyamalan promises that there is much more to Trap and its twists than the trailers reveal.
  • The film supposedly follows a serial killer with his daughter trying to evade a police trap at a big concert.

If you think you have everything figured out after seeing the trailers for the new M. Night Shyamalan film Trap, think again. The master of the modern cinematic twist admits you are seeing exactly what he wanted you to see. He's also dropping hints that there may be much more to the film than the trailers are letting on. In a new interview with Empire Magazine, The Sixth Sense director claims the trailers were very deliberate in what they revealed.

The film, which opens in August, follows Cooper (Josh Hartnett), a father taking his daughter Riley (Ariel Donoghue) to a concert, only to learn that police have set a trap to capture a serial killer known as "The Butcher," who police know is in attendance. The twist, however, is that Cooper is the serial killer, and he has to find a way to elude their trap. At least, that's what the Trap trailer appears to show.

Filmgoers are often disappointed with trailers that show the entire film's plot, or worse, spoil a twist or cameo, in an effort to sell tickets. Trailers for most Shyamalan films, however, are known for their ambiguity, and with two trailers already released, it seems the entire plot has been revealed. Shyamalan insists this was not a slip-up, and it's what he wanted you to see all along. Of the footage shown so far, he insists:

"I did know that that was how I was going to sell it when we were shooting. The story already starts months before you come into the movie theater. As a storyteller, I have to be a part of that. I was very careful."

The director says the response to the trailer "was so amazing," and is giving fans hope that Shyamalan is back with a film that will not disappoint after the divisive Knock at the Cabin. He is still careful not to oversell the movie so soon; but when asked if indeed the trailer spoils everything, he will only tease:

His statements indicate that there is yet more to the story than what we've seen so far. He had previously stated that the film was inspired by this premise — "What if The Silence of the Lambs happened at a Taylor Swift concert?" The second trailer, however, seems to indicate that the action will shift outside the concert venue, and that Hartnett will engage in some cat-and-mouse theatrics with a police consultant named Dr. Grant, played by iconic actress Hayley Mills in a genius bit of casting. Obviously, there is more to the story than the trailer lets on.

Best M. Night Shyamalan Movies, Ranked

M. Night Shyamalan has had one interesting career. From Knock at the Cabin to The Sixth Sense, here are his best films, ranked.

Trap's announced cast indicates that we don't know everything that is going on. Alison Pill (Picard) appears in an unnamed role, as does Marcia Bennett (The Last of Us) as Cooper's mother and Marnie McPhail (Orphan Black: Echoes) as "Jody's Mom." We don't know who Jody is in the film (it could be Pill), so McPhail's prominence in the cast list indicates it is a key character we haven't seen yet.

If the trailer is indeed exactly how Shyamalan planned it, he could be setting viewers up for the mother of all plot twists. Although some of his recent films have failed to impress critics and moviegoers, Trap looks like an attempt to win everyone back. Hartnett himself describes the film as "dark" and "very bizarre," giving hope that it will surprise everyone.

Shyamalan has built his film career on the critical and box office success of films like The Sixth Sense, Signs, Unbreakable, and Split. Films like Lady in the Water, The Happening, and The Last Airbender have shown his ability to deliver a dud, however. Shyamalan is well aware of this, so Trap could turn out to be the return to form fans have been hoping for.

Trap opens in theaters August 2 at theaters everywhere.
