Padma Bridge reduced external control: Hasina

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has highlighted the economic significance and global impact of the Padma Bridge at its completion ceremony.

"This bridge has reduced the control of development partners and forced them to recognise Bangladesh's importance," she said at a rally to mark the project's milestone at the Mawa end of the structure on Friday.

Following Hasina's decision, the bridge was built using government funds after the World Bank withdrew.

This has eased road connectivity between the southwest region and the capital.

It has also boosted economic vitality in a vast area.

On Jun 25, 2022, a new chapter of road communication began in Bangladesh with the inauguration of the Padma Bridge.

The rail route opened in 2023.

Hasina said,"The revenue generated through tolls will not be assessed solely by its monetary value. This bridge represents our pride, and its worth transcends financial considerations."

"This decision has given Bangladesh dignity. The mindset doubting our progress without external aid has changed."

"Now, Bangladesh commands international respect. Its people have gained dignity, and following the bridge's construction, they can proudly stride onto the global stage," Hasina said.

“We will transform Bangladesh into a developed, prosperous, and smart nation by 2041 through socio-economic development.

“No matter the obstacles, our red and green flag will continue to soar with pride worldwide," she added.
