Forgotten stars and major slip-ups – Five little known WWE Money in the Bank stats and facts

talksport.com 3 days ago

Drew McIntyre is threatening to become the latest wrestler to cash in a Money in the Bank briefcase ahead of Saturday’s huge event in Canada.

The Scot is one of the male grapplers vying for glory at the WWE Premium Live event, the ladder match netting its victor a guaranteed championship match at a time of their choosing.

Angered by being scuppered by CM Punk in his quest to win and hold on to the World Heavyweight title at WrestleMania and Clash at the Castle in recent months, McIntyre claims Saturday will be his defining moment.

He’s gone so far as to say not only will he win the ladder match, but that he’ll cash in on whoever is World Heavyweight champ at the time – putting incumbent Damian Priest and challenger Seth Rollins on notice.

Should the Scottish Warrior get as far as cashing in the briefcase, he’ll become the 31st individual to do so across the storied history of one of WWE’s liveliest concepts.

Ahead of Saturday, talkSPORT.com rounds up five facts you may not know about Money in the Bank.

WWE up to 30 MITB cash-ins in almost 20 years

Money in the Bank has steadily established itself as one of WWE’s most well-known and popular events thanks to the unknown element of the ladder match concept and the storyline jeopardy it places around its champions.

Since Edge first cashed in the Money in the Bank back in 2006, cash-ins have become a regular feature of WWE’s television and Premium Live Event offerings.

The vast majority have come on PLEs – WWE’s term for pay-per-views, with just 11 cash-ins coming on the company’s television programmes like Raw and Smackdown.

John Cena's Money in the Bank history is mixed to say the least

Money in the Bank’s first loser

The concept of Money in the Bank is to create new stars – or reinvent existing ones - by having them win the ladder match and, more often than not, go on to win championship gold as a result.

For a small handful, however, things haven’t gone quite to plan. Across the 30 cash-ins so far, only five bouts have ended without the targeted title changing hands.

The first of those to fail was Damien Sandow who, in 2013, came up short against John Cena, who successfully defended his title on Raw in Orlando Florida.

John Cena won and lost his Money in the Bank

Tasting victory in your Money in the Bank cash-in match leaves you almost certain to be walking away with championship gold. Almost.

Cena may have ensured Sandow's unwanted place in history by turning back the forgotten star's challenge, but Cena, too, holds a dubious Money in the Bank distinction.

In 2012, he gave CM Punk plenty of notice of his intention to cash-in his briefcase, and even went on to win the match, but ended up going home empty-handed.

WWE’s fictional world generally only allows for championships to be won by pinfall or submission – Cena was victorious by disqualification after The Big Show interfered in the bout, costing Cena the gold and effectively saving Punk.

CM Punk holds a piece of history - with a few catches

Moving away from cash-ins for a moment - Punk holds quite the place in Money in the Bank folklore. While Kane and Kofi Kingston are tied on the highest number of MITB match appearances with seven apiece, Punk is the only man to have won the famed ladder match on two occasions.

He’s featured in four such match-ups, and won in both 2008 and 2009, making him the only wrestler to claim consecutive successes in the clash.

Former Women’s Champion Carmella is the only female WWE star to win two Money in the Bank ladder matches. She was victorious at MITB event in 2017, but was forced to do battle for it again after being ‘stripped’ of the accolade on a technicality given it was her partner in crime, James Ellsworth, who’d retrieved the case for her.

Undeterred, Carmella won the re-match, too – with Ellsworth still getting involved.

Edge and The Miz do have the honour of having cashed in the Money in the Bank briefcase twice, but each did so having on one occasion won the briefcase outside of the traditional ladder match.

All cash-ins aim for the top bar one

Of all the 30 Money in the Bank cash-ins to date, all bar one have been for the top WWE titles available to that star – for instance the Raw or SmackDown Women’s title, or the various WWE Universal, World and Undisputed Championships.

The only cash-in to be for a supposedly lesser title was that of Austin Theory in 2022. On a November episode of Raw, he looked to pounce on Seth Rollins to win the United States Championship, but ended up red faced after Bobby Lashley intervened and attacked him, leaving Rollins the task of picking the bones to successfully retain his title.
