Rotherham United Manager Steve Evans told the Official Site that it was never about how many goals his team could score after the Millers first friendly fixture ended with a seven-nil win over Parkgate.

‘The people of Parkgate are wonderful people and they got the opportunity to see twelve hundred Millers fans come through the gate which is fantastic.

‘The performance by the lads was good and we started of really bright and moved the ball well and I thought we played some really good bits. Some players came back with a really focussed approach but it takes some players a little while to get there.’

Sam Nombe scored four goals last night, Joshua Kayode two and Tom Eaves one.

‘Big Josh was written off wasn’t he,’ the Millers Boss said, ‘but there’s a top player in there for sure. He will probably go in the summer, he was transfer listed for a reason, but it was great to see his purpose, his runs, his goals were good. And it was good to see Eavesy slip one in as well and Sam has come back in really good shape and he looked razor sharp.

‘It was good to see Liam Kelly control the middle and the same in the second half from Christ Tiehi with MacDonald running off him. Joe Powell and Ollie Rathbone were really, really good and defensively we looked strong in both halves.’

After a full week of training Steve said, ‘The boys are in really good shape. The amount of running they have been doing is incredible. With five or six weeks to go we are in brilliant shape.

‘We were missing three players tonight – Jamie McCart, Shaun McWilliams and Jonson Clarke-Harris – and I think some of those lads were disappointed when I said they weren’t getting on the pitch tonight but we will look at them next week and they understand it’s for the benefit of them.’

It was a good work out for the players last night and shortly they will be off to Scotland for a training camp.
