Find out everything you need to know about Celtic’s squad numbers for the 2024/25 season.

The iconic green and white Hoops have been worn by some of the best players in the world. From Henrik Larsson to as far back as Jimmy Johnstone with the Europan Cup-winning Lisbon Lions, the Celtic jersey has been adorned by players who have brought much joy to the Parkhead stands and silverware to the Paradise trophy cabinet.

And as the new 2024/25 season nears, here is a comprehensive list of the Celtic squad numbers including those that are free for Brendan Rodgers‘ new summer additions and those that have been worn by former players of the past including some real Celtic legends.

We will update the page as new signings are announced and if and when the squad number changes for the new season ahead.

1 –

Previously worn by: Joe Hart, Craig Gordon, Fraser Forster, Artur Boruc, Pat Bonner and Lisbon Lion, Ronnie Simpson.

The retirement of Joe Hart means that the iconic goalkeeper number is free as Brendan Rodgers continues the hunt for Celtic’s new number one.

2 – Alistair Johnston

Previously worn by: Christopher Jullien, Johan Myallby, Tom Boyd, Peter Grant, Danny McGrain, David Hay and Lisbon Lion, Jim Craig.

Worn by Alistair Johnston since his arrival at Celtic in January 2022, the Canadian fullback has won two League titles, two Scottish Cups and a League Cup.

3 – Greg Taylor

Previously worn by: Emilio Izaguirre, Stephane Mahe, Tom Boyd, Tommy Burns and Lisbon Lion, Tommy Gemmell.

Signed as a replacement for Kieran Tierney, Greg Taylor has had a successful Celtic career wearing the number three jersey since 2019 racking up nine domestic honours.

4 – Gustaf Lagerbielke

Previously worn by: Carl Starfelt, Stephen McManus, Jackie McNamara, Roy Aitken, Peter Grant and Lisbon Lion, Bobby Murdoch.

The number four jersey hasn’t been kind to Gustaf Lagerbielke as the Swede has struggled to break into the Celtic team since his 2023 summer move from Elfsborg.

5 – Liam Scales

Previously worn by: Virgil van Dijk, Gary Caldwell, Joos Valgaeren, Derek Whyte and the legendary Lisbon Lion, Billy McNeill.

Liam Scales has enjoyed a tremendous season at Celtic wearing the number five jersey after it looked like he could have been leaving the club last summer.

6 –

Previously worn by: Bobo Balde, Peter Grant, Murdo McLeod and Lisbon Lion, John Clarke.

Lying free since the departure of Nat Phillips, the number six jersey is ready for when Brendan Rodgers opens up the Celtic chequebook to start adding to the first team.

7 – Luis Palma

Previously worn by: Henrik Larsson, the greatest ever Celt and Lisbon Lion Jimmy Johnstone, Scott McDonald, Davie Provan, Simon Donnelly and Billy Stark.

Luis Palma is the next player to take up this iconic jersey number after Greek striker Giorgos Giakoumakis left the club in January 2023.

8 – Kyogo Furuhashi

Previously worn by: Scott Brown, Alan Thompson, Paul McStay, Kenny Dalglish and Lisbon Lion, Willie Wallace.

Since his £4.5m from Vissell Kobe in 2021, Kyogo Furuhashi has racked up 73 goals in 133 appearances in three seasons at Celtic.

9 –

Previously worn by: Leigh Griffiths, Giorgos Samaras, Chris Sutton, Harald Brattbakk, Charlie Nicholas, Frank McGarvey, and Lisbon Lions duo, John Hughes and Stevie Chalmers.

Lying empty since Adam Idah returned to Norwich City from his loan spell, the Republic of Ireland international striker did this famous jersey number justice with nine goals in 19 appearances to help seal a league and Scottish Cup double in 2024.

10 – Nicolas Kuhn

Previously worn by: Moussa Dembele, Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, John Hartson, Murdo McLeod, Tommy Burns and Lisbon Lion, Bertie Auld.

Taking over the squad number from the ill-fated spell of Albian Ajeti, Nicolas Kuhn has shown flashes of promise since his January 2024 move to Celtic from Rapid Vienna.

11-

Previously worn by: Liel Abada, Scott Sinclair, Brian McClair, Frank McGarvey, Paul Hartley and Lisbon Lion, Bobby Lennox.

Lying empty since Liel Abada left Celtic in March 2024, the iconic number eleven jersey has also been graced with players like John Collins whose talent deserved so much more in one of Celtic’s most turbulent times in their history.

12 –

Previously worn by: Mark Wilson, Tommy Johnson, Pierce O’Leary and Lisbon Lions duo John Fallon and Jim Craig.

Not since Ismaila Soro left Celtic in January 2023 has the jersey been filled but it has graced the likes of Chris Morris and Joe Miller.

13 – Hyunjun Yang

Previously worn by: Aaron Mooy, Sean Maloney, Pat Bonner and Peter Latchford.

Taking over the 13 jersey from Mooy, Hyunjun Yang has struggled to capture the form that persuaded Celtic to shell out £2m for his services in the summer of 2023.

14 –

Previously worn by: David Turnbull, Stuart Armstrong, Paul Lambert and Frank McAvennie.

Now lying free since David Turnbull was sold to Cardiff City, the number 14 jersey was also worn by the likes of Brian O’Neill, Derek Riordan and Stevie Fulton.

15- Odin Thiago Holm

Previously worn by: Joe Hart (2021/22), Kris Commons, Phil O’Donnell, Bobby Petta and Alan McInally.

Odin Thiago Holm hasn’t featured much in the Celtic first-team since his summer move last season but hope remains he could still have a future at the club at such a young age.

16 – James McCarthy

Previously worn by: Joe Ledley, Thomas Gravesen, Roy Keane, Gerry Creaney and Ulrik Laursen.

James McCarthy was signed for free by Ange Postecoglou in 2021 and has been barely seen in the green and white Hoops for over two seasons.

17 – Maik Nawrocki

Previously worn by: Jota, Ryan Christie, Didier Agathe, Steven Pressley and Enrico Annoni.

Maik Nawrocki joined Celtic in the summer of 2023 and struggled to get some game time behind Liam Scales. The Pole will be hoping to kick on in the new season ahead under Brendan Rodgers as a partner to Cameron Carter-Vickers.

18 – Yuki Kobayashi

Previously worn by: Neil Lennon, Tom Rogic, Ki Sung-Yeung, Massimo Donati, Malky McKay and Tosh McKinlay.

Worn by some of the most successful players in Celtic’s history, Yuki Kobayashi‘s number 18 jersey is likely to be lying empty this summer as the Japanese defender has been linked with moves away from the club.

19 – Hyeongyu Oh

Previously worn by: Mikey Johnston, Barry Robson and Stilyan Petrov.

As with Yuki Kobayashi, Hyeongyu Oh looks certain to leave Celtic after failing to nail down a starting spot in over two seasons at the club.

20 – Cameron Carter-Vickers

Previously worn by: Dedryck Boyata, Paddy McCourt and Rab Douglas.

One of Celtic’s best players, Cameron Carter-Vickers has been a rock since joining the club on a permanent deal in 2022 after a successful year-long loan spell from Spurs.

21 –

Previously worn by: Yosuke Ideguchi, Olivier Ntcham, Charlie Mulgrew and Magnus Hedman

Since Yosuke Ideguchi left Celtic in January of this year, the number 21 is yet to find a player to fill it.

22 – Hyeokkyu Kwon

Previously worn by: Odsonne Edouard, Jason Denayer and Glenn Loovens.

Not since Odsonne Edouard has the number 22 been successful at Celtic as Hyeokkyu Kwon struggles to carve out a career in Paradise since joining the club last summer.

23 –

Previously worn by: Mikael Lustig, Stanislav Varga and Jonathan Gould.

Not seen on the pitch since the departure of Invincible Treble winner, Mikael Lustig, the Celtic fans will hope that Brendan Rodgers will sign a calibre of player that can bring that same level of success to the club to fill it.

24 – Tomoki Iwata

Previously worn by: Lukasz Zaluska and Jean-Joël Perrier-Doumbé.

Tomoki Iwata has given the number 24 jersey some success after winning a treble with Ange Postecoglou and a double with Brendan Rodgers last season.

25 –

Previously worn by: Alexandro Bernabéi, Shunsuke Nakamura and Lubomir Moravcik.

Now that Alexandro Bernabei looks on his way out of Celtic, Rodgers could do well to unearth another Namamura or Moravcik to fill this iconic number.

26 –

Previously worn by: Craig Gordon and Fraser Forster.

If Brendan Rodgers can find a goalkeeper or two of the ilk of Craig Gordon and Fraser Forster then the Celtic manager will be onto a winner.

27 –

Previously worn by: Mohamed Elyounoussi, Patrick Roberts and Scott McDonald

Celtic have had three brilliant attackers adorn this number. What would Rodgers to give to have another three like them?

28 –

Previously worn by: Paulo Bernardo and Leigh Griffiths.

Now that Paulo Bernardo is back at Benfica, the Celtic fans will be hoping that he returns permanently this summer to take up his old number for next season.

29 – Scott Bain

Previously worn by: Koki Mizuno and Shaun Maloney.

Scott Bain is another who could be on his way out of Celtic after only appearing once in two seasons at the club.

30 – Liam Shaw

Previousty worn by: Jeremie Frimpong, Steve Guppy and Vidar Riseth.

Liam Shaw is another of Ange Postecoglou’s singing who appears to have no future at Celtic after spending much of his Parkhead career out on loan.

31 – Benjamin Siegrist:

Previously worn by: Rafael Scheidt.

Assigned the number since his free transfer to Celtic in 2022, Benjamin Siegrist has made a grand total of two appearances for the club and looks to be heading for a summer exit.

33 – Matt O’Riley

Previously worn by: Hatem Abd Elhamed and Beram Kayal.

Signed by Ange Postecoglou in 2022, Matt O’Riley has been a revelation at Celtic and has been linked to some of the top clubs in Europe.

38 – Daizen Maeda

Previously worn by: Leonardo Fasan, Josh Thompson and Rocco Quinn.

Daizen Maeda was brought to Celtic by Ange Postecoglou in December 2021 and scored on his debut against Hibs.

41 – Reo Hatate

Previously worn by: John Kennedy.

Another Ange Postecoglou signing in 2021, Reo Hatate was pivotal in helping wrestle the title from Rangers in his debut season.

42 – Callum McGregor

Previously worn by: Michael McGlinchey.

Handed the number way back in 2011, Celtic captain Callum McGregor is now one of the club’s most decorated players and led the Parkhead side to a world-record eighth domestic treble.

49 – James Forrest

Previously worn by: Scott Cuthbert.

A product of the Celtic academy, James Forrest is Celtic’s second most decorated player (24) behind Lisbon Lion, Bobby Lennox (25).

54 – Adam Montgomery

Previously worn by: Jamie Lindsay and Ryan Conroy.

Assigned the shirt number in 2020, Adam Montgomery has made 20 appearances for Celtic and has enjoyed loan spells at Aberdeen, Motherwell and St Johnstone.

56 – Anthony Ralston

Previously worn by: Filip Twardzik.

Proud owner of the number 56 since 2016, Anthony Ralston is a product of the Celtic academy who has enjoyed recent enormous success at the club.

57 – Stephen Welsh

Previously worn by: Welsh is one of two Celtic players to have had sole ownership of a jersey number.

Another product of the academy, Stephen Welsh has enjoyed success at Celtic under Neil Lennon, Ange Postecoglou and Brendan Rodgers.

90 – Mikey Johnston

Previously worn by: As with Stephen Welsh, Johnston has had sole ownership of the number 90 jersey.

Since making his debut for Celtic in 2017, Mikey Johnston has made 92 appearances wearing the number 90 jersey but does look to be on his way out of Celtic after a successful loan spell at West Bromwich Albion.

Empty Celtic squad numbers with famous players

Celtic have 99 first-team numbers registered and whilst 28 have been assigned, there are others that have been worn by some famous Celts that are still lying empty.

Tony Watt once wore the number 32 for that famous night against Barcelona and Invincible Treble Celt, Kristoffer Ajer‘s number 35 is still looking for a new owner.

Number 46 is still awaiting a new player after Aiden McGeady left Celtic in 2010 as well as Kieran Tierney‘s number 63.

The famous 67 was once worn by Fraser Forster and Victor Wanyama and Jeremie Frimpong‘s number 71 is still needing to be filled after his Celtic exit to Bayer Leverkusen in 2019.

Hopefully, Brendan Rodgers has as many talented names on his list to add to the Celtic squad as there are a variety of iconic jersey numbers from our recent history still requiring a new Celtic hero to write a new chapter in them.
