Teen suicide has become a pressing issue in Louisiana, with statistics showing it as the 14th leading cause of death in the state and the 3rd leading cause of death for ages 10-34. To address this concerning trend, a new state law mandates the inclusion of the 988 suicide prevention hotline number on the back of student IDs.
Local Support for the Initiative
Residents like Dexyhanna Beauchamp appreciate the significance of this law, stating, "I feel like it’s terrible that it has to be a law, you know what I’m saying? But, I feel like it’s great that their kids have the opportunity to know where they can get help from." Students, such as Emmy Neumann from St. Joseph Academy, also recognize the importance of having access to such support. Neumann shares, "It’s very nice to know that we have that support and it’s good to have that. I do think social media is part of the deal, but I also support social media in a way so it’s tricky."
Gender Disparities and Risk Factors
Studies, like the one conducted by the NIH, indicate that females are at a higher risk of suicide attempts compared to boys. Various risk factors contribute to this alarming trend, including eating disorders, PTSD, bipolar disorder, depression, and previous abortions. Dr. James Wayne from Ochsner emphasizes the urgent need for mental health resources for young individuals. According to Dr. Wayne, "There’s lots of different reasons why I think people theorize there may be an increase in anxiety and depression amongst teenagers. But the alarming thing is the level of anxiety and depression."
Supporting Access to Mental Health Services
As a pediatrician, Dr. Wayne believes that any initiative facilitating easier access to mental health professionals for children is a step in the right direction. He asserts, "Anything that allows kids access to a mental health professional without being embarrassed, without having a stigma attached anything that helps them to speak more easily with a professional the better." In conclusion, the implementation of the 988 suicide prevention hotline number on student IDs in Louisiana schools aims to provide vital assistance and support to those in need of mental health resources.
