The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to shell out Rs 95 crore for repairing the portion of the Jog flyover which collapsed on the bonnet of a moving vehicle on Thursday afternoon.
Civic officials said that the portion of the flyover that collapsed was a slab that held the base of the carriageway and as part of the repair works, the entire portion of the columns in the base of the flyover will be repaired.
In 2022, the bridge was handed over to the BMC for maintenance along with the Western Express Highway, which was under MMRDA’s jurisdiction.
“After the flyover was handed to us, we found out that it needed structural repairs on urgent basis. As a result, we had been mooting the idea of carrying out the repair work. However, the process was deferred since the code of conduct for the Lok Sabha elections were in place,” said a civic official.
The official maintained that while carrying out repair works for the bridge, the BMC will not shut down vehicular movement.
“The civic works will be carried out mainly during the night and if we do any work during the day, only one lane will be closed for traffic movement. The final draft of the tender was ready and will be floated in next few days,” the official said.
The space below the flyover belongs to a private real estate firm and civic authorities said that a notice would be sent to them as well for securing the area.
The Jog flyover was built in 1997 by the Public Works Department (PWD) and at present passes above the Western Express Highway.
