The FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD) has appealed to residents living in areas prone to flooding to relocate to higher grounds to avoid loss of lives and property.

The Department’s Public Relations Officer, Nkechi Isa, issued the advisory in a statement on Saturday.

This followed a previous warning by the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) regarding rising water levels across rivers and lagoons in the country.

NIWA had appealed to persons living by river banks across the country to relocate.

The authority also called on boat operators and passengers to take note of the rising tides and ensure strict adherence to the safety regulations including the compulsory use of life jackets.

The National Flood Warning Center Abuja said some states and their environs are likely to flood between July 6 and July 10, 2024.

The state’s include Niger, Nasarawa,Kogi and Kaduna, which are states that share boundaries with the FCT.

The Acting Director General of FEMD, Mrs Florence Dawon Wenegieme, subsequently, appealed to residents of the FCT to heed the early warnings issued by the Department to ensure that no life is lost to flooding this wet season.

She explained that floods in the neighboring states may cause river flooding in the FCT

Wenegieme also appealed to motorists not to drive through a pool of water during the rains, but to use an alternative route or wait for the water level to subside.

She advised citizens to use the 112 emergency toll-free number in the event of a disaster.
