The Xi Gundam From The ‘Gundam Hathaway’ Movie Is Getting A New Toy

Forbes 2 days ago

It took a good while, but the Xi Gundam from the recent Gundam Hathaway movie is finally getting its own Robot Damashii toy.

This was something that was previewed a good while ago, but things like COVID slowed down the release. In fact, I’ve been covering the Hathaway’s Flash toys for nearly a decade now, with the original Robot Damashii Penelope release back in 2015 being notable.

This particular version of the Xi Gundam is interesting though. We’ve already had two Robot Damashii versions of the Xi Gundam, one in 2013 and another in 2015. Both of those were of the modified SD G Generation designs, which were also featured in Super Robot Wars V.

This particular version is from the recent and thoroughly amazing movie adaptation. However, it’s actually far closer to the novel version of the design, all of which were penned by the very talented Moriki Yasuhiro.

Moriki is a fascinating mecha designer, having worked all manner of anime including that of Zeorymer and the Super Famicom game Xardion, with the latter getting a new Moderoid kit. He’s also fairly active on Twitter/X and also has a very nice artbook that’s worth picking up.

All that aside, this new toy has a few interesting additions over the previous iterations, namely all the design changes and the fact that the cockpit can open now. It also looks entirely gorgeous and I am absolutely picking this up.

Unfortunately, it’s a Premium Bandai release and expensive with it. Coming in at 33,000 yen (or around $186), which is nearly double the price point of the 2015 toy. My guess is that the yen exchange rate is hammering Japanese companies pretty hard these days.

So if you enjoyed the Gundam Hathaway movie, then the Xi Gundam is finally getting the Robot Damashii toy it deserves, and I will be happily adding it to my collection once it is shipped this December.
