Mali captain Hamari Traore has been suspended for inciting “rebellion” following the release of a letter critical of the national federation.

Traore, a Real Sociedad defender, was one of several international players who issued a letter last month criticising “poor management” and a lack of professionalism among officials in recent years.

The players have vowed to boycott the national squad if the federation fails to address the crisis that they claim Malian football is facing.

The letter, addressed to supporters, created a stir in Mali. Traore ignored a summons to appear before a disciplinary commission.

The 32-year-old player has been suspended “for lacking honour and dignity, incitement and rebellion against the national team and Malian football.

This step was taken “as a precautionary measure” while the procedure is being forwarded to the disciplinary committee, he stated.

Mali was knocked from the quarterfinals of the African Cup of Nations in February and is currently fourth in their qualifying group for the 2026 World Cup, with one win, two draws, and one loss.

Eric Sekou Chelle, the national coach, was fired last month after two years in the position.
