LAGOS – Chief Olusola Agidi, a Certified Driver Educator and Trainer has also called on President Bola Tinubu led Federal Government to reform and modernise public transport system in Nigeria, towing the path of the Lagos State Government who recently made public its plans to restrict Korope bus operators to inner streets away from the highways amongst other far reaching planned transportation reforms.

Chief Agidi gave the advise during an exclusive chat with DAILY INDEPENDENT on the state of transportation and safety in the Country, expressing his concerns on the rising cases of crashes and traffic chaos caused by keke Napep, Mini buses and commercial motorcycle riders on Nigerian roads.

Citing International Best Practices, Chief Agidi said, “in advanced cities like the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia Dubai, and other advanced countries, keke buses and commercial motorcycles are not permitted on their roads, rather, a more organised and regulated public transportation systems are put in place and implemented fully.”

Agidi also raised issues concerning Taxi operations allowing multiple picking of passengers to different routes, declaring it as unsafe because innocent passengers can be attacked by criminal gangs who would pretend to be fellow passengers, stressing that many countries have outlawed it, including neighbouring Ghana.

He said there is no other time than now to phase out Keke Buses, commercial motorcycling and the outdated Taxi operational system from Nigerian roads, while introducing modern and efficient transporting systems, saying, “this move will improve road and public safety, security, as well as enhance the aesthetic appeal of Nigerian cities.”

He however acknowledged the potential impact on employment but proposed providing alternative livelihood opportunities for those affected.
