  • WBC approves Deontay Wilder for bridgerweight title shot.
  • Bridgerweight class established in 2020, recognized by WBC and WBA.
  • Winner of Okolie vs. Lerena could face Wilder if requested.

In a recent statement, WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman confirmed that the sanctioning body would approve Deontay Wilder for a shot at the bridgerweight title.

The bridgerweight class, established in 2020 with a weight limit of 224 pounds, is recognized by both the WBC and WBA.

Currently, Evgeny Tishchenko holds the WBA title, while Lawrence Okolie recently claimed the WBC's version by knocking out Lukasz Rozanski in May.

Deontay Wilder Approved To Fight For The WBC Bridgerweight Title

The Bronze Bomber Has A Chance To Become A Two-Division Champion

Okolie is set to defend his title against Kevin Lerena, but Sulaiman indicated that the winner of that fight could face Wilder if he submits a request to the WBC. "I am sure that if Wilder wishes to fight vs the Bridgerweight champion the WBC would approve, but we have not received anything from our dear Deontay camp," Sulaiman wrote on X after a fan inquired about the possibility.

Wilder, who held the WBC heavyweight title from 2015 to 2020, has the opportunity to become a two-weight world champion by capturing the bridgerweight crown. Despite recent losses to Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang, many fans hope to see 'The Bronze Bomber' make a successful comeback.

Wilder has remained silent since his loss to Zhang with many speculating whether he will retire or continue fighting.

The American former champion has suffered back-to-back losses to Joseph Parker and Zhang. He wasn’t competitive in either fight and lost the opportunity to fight Anthony Joshua in what would have been a mega-fight.

The 38-year-old had been criticized for fighting low-level competition during his reign as the WBC champion. Tyson Fury presented his biggest challenge and Wilder failed to get a win in their trilogy.

Lawrence Okolie Welcomes Fight With Wilder

A potential fight with Okolie could be in the cards, as the Brit has expressed interest in boxing Wilder after his win over Rozanski. "When there is a belt on the line, it is always better," Okolie told iFL TV. "Obviously, he (Wilder) was WBC heavyweight champion; he will probably want to box for a WBC belt."

The boxing world eagerly awaits Wilder's next move as he contemplates a return to the ring and a shot at becoming a two-weight world champion.
