Rising Card Skimming Scams at Gas Stations and How to Avoid Them
Law enforcement agencies are issuing warnings about the rising incidence of card skimming scams at gas stations. These scams involve devices that can steal your card information without your knowledge.
According to Garda spokesperson Supt Kevin Donohue, those involved in the ATM operated in many locations. He detailed that they used two pieces of equipment: a pinhole camera above the keypad and a small skimmer over the card slit. These tools capture both your card information and PIN number, making it easy for scammers to access your funds.
If you look closely, you might notice something unusual around the ATM or gas station pump. A Garda spokesperson advised, “Any ATM user who notes anything suspicious at an ATM machine is strongly advised to ‘walk away’ and immediately contact the gardaí
.” Additionally, it’s wise to use ATMs located in well-lit and busy areas where skimming devices are less likely to be installed.
Experts urge vigilance when using any card-reading machine. Ensure to cover the keypad when entering your PIN and regularly monitor your bank statements for any unauthorized transactions. By staying aware, you can protect yourself from becoming a victim of these scams.
One victim shared her experience of having her card skimmed at a gas station: “It was just a typical day when I stopped for gas, but later that evening, I noticed some strange charges on my account.” Her advice is clear – always stay alert and report anything that seems off.
The key takeaway here is awareness. By paying close attention to your surroundings and understanding how these devices operate, you can significantly reduce your risk of falling prey to card skimming scams.
