HOUSTON (KIAH) – There was a fatal accident involving a wrecker and a Chevy Cruze which caused multiple lanes to be closed on the roadway. Houston Police Department (HPD) and Houston Fire authorities responded to the call at Quitman near highway 45 around 11:30 p.m.

The wrecker driver was unharmed, but the driver of the Chevy Cruze was taken to the hospital where they unfortunately died from their injuries.

It is suspected that the driver of the Chevy Cruze was impaired. According to preliminary reports, the driver of the Chevy Cruze went across multiple lanes, hitting a center divider before being struck by the wrecker truck.

During the initial investigation, another DWI driver struck an HPD patrol vehicle that was blocking the Eastbound transition ramp onto 45 northbound. No other injuries were reported and the impaired driver was arrested.

The roadways were reopened around 4 a.m.
