Florida Mom Receives Probation After Locking Adopted Son in a Box
In a contentious and troubling case, Tracy Ferriter, a mother from Florida, has avoided jail time despite her guilty plea for locking her adopted son in a box as punishment. The case has raised serious questions about child abuse and the justice system’s response.
Tracy Ferriter, 48, pled guilty to charges of first-degree aggravated child abuse, third-degree felony false imprisonment, and third-degree child neglect on June 24. Rather than serving time in jail, she received probation and house arrest. During the hearing, Ferriter tried to convince the court of her loving family environment despite the abuse allegations. She claimed, We were a completely loving family. I love my kids. We just tried to do the best that we could with what we had.
Ferriter and her husband Timothy, who leaned visibly on his wife during the hearing, are described as evangelical parents. They maintained that locking their teen son in a box was an appropriate form of discipline due to his purportedly problematic behavior, which included lying, stealing valuables, and threatening harm.
The adopted son was brought home from Vietnam at six months old and reportedly suffers from ADHD and Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD), conditions that can make forming emotional bonds challenging.
The case gained momentum when the teen ran away from home in February 2022. He told officers he preferred being in prison over living under his devout Catholic parents’ abuse. The police affidavit noted he felt unloved at home.
The investigators found critical evidence through footage recovered from the home’s Ring camera system. This footage corroborated the teen’s claims of being locked in a small box (measuring just about 2.37 feet tall by 1.69 feet wide) for several hours each day.
The boy detailed a traumatising living scenario where he was banned from most parts of the house, fed leftover food, and forced to relieve himself in a bucket. His punishments included whipping with belts and slapping with hands while being monitored via Ring camera.
Despite these serious allegations and incriminating evidence, Tracy Ferriter’s plea reportedly painted a much different picture of their household dynamics. During a press conference after her hearing, she tearfully insisted that there were many unknown factors not portrayed by the media and claimed they did their best given the circumstances.
