Muharram 2024 End Date: The holy month of Muharram is celebrated among the Muslim community across the globe. Muharram is considered to be the period of recalling and mourning the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain by the community of Shia Muslims. The mourning period begins from the first sight of Muharram and continues for the next two months and eight days. The first ten days of this month are known as Ashura during which the community wears black clothes and carries processions. According to the Gregorian calendar, the start of Muharram 2024 is anticipated to be on July 7.

The tenth month of Muharram, the new year, is referred to as Ashura. It is one of the holy months in Islam and is marked by religious ceremonies and celebrations. Ashura is celebrated by Sunni Muslims as the day that Allah parted the Red Sea to allow Moses and his companions to flee the pharaoh.

This day marks the passing away of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the Prophet through his daughter Fatimah and his son-in-law Ali. During the Battle of Karbala, the majority of his group of followers were slain by Umayyad soldiers. Ashura honours the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali.

Muharram Significance

During this blessed month, the rewards for our good deeds are multiplied and the sighting of the moon signifies new beginnings. Muslims engage in increased worship during this holy month. The 1st Muharram marks the beginning of the Islamic new year and it is known as the time to reflect on the journey and struggle of Prophet Muhammad. 

The day of Ashura is observed on the tenth Muharram and is considered as the most virtuous day of the Islamic year. It marks the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS) in the Battle of Karbala. The month of Muharram is titled as the ‘Month of Allah’ and is one of the blessings in the Islamic calendars. 

Muharram Rituals

Fasts and prayers are observed to remember Ashura. The Prophet Muhammad and his companions fasted on the day of Ashura, according to religious beliefs. As a result, in observance of the ninth and tenth days of Muharram, the Muslim community keeps fasting on this day.

Additionally, people ponder on themselves, confess their sins, and ask for pardon on Ashura Day. People think back on their deeds and engage in deeds of kindness and generosity.
