‘Outrageous, Insensitive’: NLC calls for reversal of new electricity tariff

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has vehemently demanded the immediate reversal of the new electricity tariff that recently took effect, labeling it as detrimental to both the people and the economy.

In a statement personally signed by NLC President Joe Ajaero, the organization condemned the tariff hike from N206.80 to N209.50 for Band A customers, which came into effect on July 1.

Ajaero described the increase as an act of impunity and arrogance that will exacerbate the economic woes already faced by businesses and consumers alike.

“This increment is outrageous and insensitive, particularly in the face of unresolved issues surrounding the previous 250 percent tariff hike, which led to national paralysis and the closure of 300 businesses,” Ajaero declared.

“The citizenry and organized labour vehemently protested against this unreasonable hike, demanding its reversal. We were assured by relevant authorities, including the National Assembly, that the matter would be addressed, but instead, we witness yet another hike.”

Ajaero criticized the reasons provided by the Distribution Companies (DISCOs) for the tariff increase, citing exchange rate fluctuations, interest rates, and gas costs. He argued that these explanations merely scratch the surface of Nigeria’s energy crisis without addressing its root causes.

“The government and DISCOs are not serious about finding a lasting solution to our energy challenges,” Ajaero asserted.

“This latest tariff increase will further cripple our economy and inflict more hardship on the populace. We demand an immediate reversal as it is unjustifiable and malevolent.”

The NLC warned that continued insensitivity and insincerity from the government and DISCOs could lead to growing public discontent, urging swift action to rectify the situation before it escalates further.
