FACT CHECK: Picture showing construction of overhead bridge NOT from Abia

TheCable 3 days ago

A picture showing the construction of an overhead bridge is being circulated on social media as a project executed by Alex Otti, governor of Abia, in the state.

The picture has been widely shared on Facebook and X, with the narrative that the bridge is part of the achievements of Otti since he assumed office.

On June 24, a Facebook user — Engir Peter Terlumun Impedance — posted a picture with the caption “Abia state longest bridge, This is the work of Alex Otti.. well-done sir..🙏🙏🙏”

A different Facebook user — Engr Tobit E Obasi — shared an alternate version of the post with the caption “INFRASTRUCTURE & DEVELOPMENT: Aba Abia State longest bridge… a true testament of a man that is on a destined mission!!!

“This is the work of Alex C. Otti . This type of bridge will put Abia state stright on the map…”

VERIFYING THE CLAIM

To verify the claim, TheCable subjected the image to Google reverse image search, and the earliest version of the image on the internet was published on the Civil Engineering Discoveries X handle on June 22.

The X handle captioned the image as “China bridge construction”.

VERDICT

The claim that the viral image is the longest bridge in Abia state is false.

Research showed that the earliest version of the image on the internet was ascribed to China, not Abia.
