Charlie Hunnam looks forward in a jungle in The Lost City of Z

In 2016, Charlie Hunnam starred in the underrated yet critically acclaimed film The Lost City of Z. The film, which is inspired by a true story, will be leaving Netflix this month.

The Lost City of Z premiered in 2016 to an underwhelming response. Charlie Hunnam co-starred with Sienna Miller, Tom Holland, and Robert Pattinson, and the film was inspired by the British explorer Percy Fawcett's real-life adventures. Currently streaming on Netflix, The Lost City of Z's time on the platform is ticking, as it's set to leave on July 15.

Before Jamie Dornan landed his role in Fifty Shades of Grey, Charlie Hunnam was set to play the kinky billionaire. His exit shocked many.

The Lost City of Z follows Fawcett's journey into the Amazon in the 20th century in search of a lost ancient city which he called "Z." The film is based on the real explorer's journeys, as well as David Grann's The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon novel, who followed in the explorer's footsteps and paralleled their experiences.

The Charlie Hunnam-led film impressed the critics, and it currently holds a Certified Fresh rating of 86% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, not the same can be said by the audience, who gave the film 58% on the same review-aggregator platform. At the same time, the film didn't do wonders in theaters, ending its run with only $19.3 million against a $30 million budget (via The Numbers). Some of the poor reviews note that Charlie Hunnam was great in the role, and, while the film has fantastic settings, it is a bit "slow" at times and it lacks "attention to details" in several scenes.

Audiences love being dazzled by action adventure movies, and films like Indiana Jones and National Treasure deliver the thrills that fans crave.

What's Next for Charlie Hunnam?

Since starring in The Lost City of Z, Charlie Hunnam had several critically-acclaimed roles in 2019 with Triple Frontier, The Gentlemen, Jungleland, and True History of Kelly Gang, adding another critically acclaimed film in 2021, Last Looks. His most recent project was Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon, and he appeared in both parts, which hold "rotten" scores on the review-aggregator website.

After his role in Rebel Moon, the Sons of Anarchy actor has joined a new series: Prime Video's Criminal. Adapted from Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips' original graphic novel series, Hunnam will lead the cast as Leo, who is described as "a brilliant master thief who sees all the angles, and specializes in plans with no guns and no violence." He will join forces with Better Call Saul's Michael Mando, Aria Arjona, Gus Halper, Richard Jenkins, Kadeem Hardison, Logan Browning, Taylor Selé, John Hawkes, and Aliyah Camacho.

Criminal doesn't have a streaming premiere date set yet, but it will be available for streaming on Prime Video.
