Cathal O'Sullivan brace help Cork City to comfortable win over Wexford

RUNAWAY leaders Cork City took a further step towards the title when inspired by two Cathal O'Sullivan goals they recorded a comfortable victory over struggling Wexford FC at Ferrycarrig Park. Having put the mid-season break behind the Cork City had their eyes set on a further three points to copperfasten their position as runaway leaders, while Wexford were hoping to put their inconsistent displays behind them to remain in the promotion play-off race.

While Cork look certain to keep their place at the top, securing automatic promotion and an immediate return to the top flight, in contrast to Wexford who have become draw specialists in this division, but the dropping of crucial points has seen them drop back to sixth position, albeit with a game in hand.

Wexford took a shock fourth minute lead. Cork had pressed forward in search of the opening goal following a neat move they forced the games opening corner kick. The honeside having dealt with Evan McLaughlin corner kick set up a quick counter attack, with Thomas Oluwa picking out Aaron Dobbs who beat keeper Bradley Wade from close range leaving the homeside supporters to celebrate an early 1-0 lead.

Clearly rocked by this early setback Cork stormed into game, beginning to control possession. Malic Dijkstell blazed a twenty metre effort over the top but they continued to search for the equaliser.

Winger Evan MCLaughlin who had been a constant threat down the left provided an excellent cross that was superbly volleyed to the roof of the net by Cathal O'Sullivan giving keeper Alex Moody no chance with the visitors deservedly back level at 1-1.

Cork continued to dominate possession as Barry Coffey had a twenty metre shot well held by keeper Moody, while at the opposite end the visitors back four were comfortable dominating their area as the sides went in 1-1 at the interval.

Within rwo minutes of the restart Cork City took the lead for the first time. Having played the ball out of defence through a number of players the ball came to the possession whose superb left footed inswinging shot found the opposite corner of the net leaving keeper Moody stranded on his line with the visitors deservedly in front.

Wexford were confined to counter attacks as Thomas Oluwa carried the main threat with one good run and shot going just over the top.

Cork made a treble substitutions but almost immediately had to seal with a dangerous freekick but manager Tim Clancy must have been increasingly concerned at their failure to secure a third goal given their dominant possession.

When it came to deciding the eventual outcome Cork continued to control matters restricting the homeside up front to a couple of long range efforts but the leaders had to wait until three minutes into additional time to add their third goal with former Wexford player Jack Doherty finding the net from close range to secure the points.
