More than 20 high school seniors from San Diego Jewish Academy (SDJA) have recently returned home after an enriching month studying in Poland and Israel. The educational program, organized by Jewish National Fund-USA’s Alexander Muss High School in Israel (Muss), provided students with a firsthand view of the Holocaust's horrors and Israel's resilience post the October 7 attacks.

Exploring Poland's Jewish History:

In Poland, the students delved into the rich Jewish life that existed before WWII and the devastating impact of Nazi atrocities. Visiting Auschwitz, Birkenau, and Krakow, the students witnessed the remnants of ghettos and concentration camps, gaining a deeper understanding of the Holocaust's atrocities. The visit to Schindler's factory, where Oskar Schindler saved 1,200 Jews, was a poignant moment that left a lasting impression on the students.

Emotional Transition to Israel:

Following their time in Poland, the students traveled to Israel, where they commemorated Yom HaZikaron, Israel's Memorial Day, and celebrated Yom Ha'atzmaut, Israeli Independence Day. The emotional journey from mourning to celebration made a profound impact on the students, who experienced the essence of Israeli resilience and unity.

Exploring Israel's Heritage:

During their stay in Israel, the students engaged in various activities, from hiking the fortress of Masada to visiting the Peres Center for Peace & Innovation and exploring Yad Vashem. They also enjoyed recreational activities like snorkeling in Eilat, floating in the Dead Sea, and basking in the sun on Israeli beaches. These experiences not only enriched their understanding of Israel's history but also created lasting bonds with the country.

The program, facilitated by Muss, offers a unique blend of academic and experiential learning, preparing students to advocate confidently for Israel and the Jewish People in college campuses. For the students, the journey was a transformative experience, deepening their connection to their religion and Israel.

This immersive journey, organized by Jewish National Fund-USA’s Alexander Muss High School in Israel, will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on the participating students' perspective and understanding of history and culture.
