Eddie Murphy's latest instalment in the Beverly Hills Cop franchise has been met with a wave of positive feedback from fans.

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F sees the Hollywood star return to his role as the quick-witted officer Axel Foley, three decades after the original film. The fourth movie in the Beverly Hills Cop series, which was released on Netflix last week (July 3), sees Axel reunite with some old friends when his daughter Jane's (Taylour Paige) life is put in danger.

Jane and Axel join forces with a new partner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and old buddies Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and Taggart (John Ashton) to expose a conspiracy. Top Gun: Maverick's Jerry Bruckheimer is the producer, while Australian director Mark Molloy makes his debut in feature films with this action-comedy, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is currently the most-streamed film on Netflix worldwide. It amassed 646 million minutes watched upon its release, according to viewing figures released for June 28 to July 4.

On X, formerly known as Twitter, viewers were quick to laud the 'hilarious' film - particularly as it provided a much-needed dose of nostalgia. @VyceVictus wrote: "...The key to BEVERLY HILLS COP: AXEL F is that it isn't some legacy introspective retrospective reconstructed deconstruction...it's just Another Good Beverly Hills Cop Movie. Straight out of the 80s/90s and it doesn't miss a beat" while @_TomWillis_ concurred: "It brings me great pleasure to report that BEVERLY HILLS COP: AXEL F ain't no banana in the tailpipe. It's the real deal and a hilarious nostalgia trip."

Twitter user @dwgibson2000 was full of praise, tweeting: "#EddieMurphy's still got it Beverly Hills Cop:Axel F as good as he was in the 80's" while @ConorFurlong chimed in with a similar sentiment: "I'm 10 minutes in to Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F and I've got a massive smile on my face. Eddie Murphy still got it."

The flick has won over audiences with an impressive 81 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but critics haven't been quite as charmed, doling out a more modest 67 percent from 141 reviews.

Culture Mix's Carla Hay commented that the movie 'relies heavily on nostalgia and a transparently predictable plot', yet conceded: "...This lively sequel overcomes its weaknesses with some funny moments, well-cast new characters, and plenty of expected action spectacles."

On the other hand, Brian Tallerico from RogerEbert.com found it 'buoyant and playful in a way that legacy sequels usually aren't allowed to be'.

Not everyone was convinced, however, with Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com criticising: "Just a rehash of familiar BHC tropes, plus everything plays out so awkwardly and ridiculously that there is no juice left to squeeze in the story. Why mention either how policing has changed or the strained father/daughter thing if nothing is done about it? " Echoing this view, Todd Jorgenson from Cinemalogue wrote: "Fans might appreciate this new ride-along, yet it hardly breaks fresh ground and only intermittently matches the edgy energy of the original."

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is available to stream now on Netflix.
