Luxembourg Women's Council slams Trades Chamber ad for reinforcing gender stereotypes

rtl.lu 2 days ago

The Luxembourg National Women's Council (CNFL) has criticised an advertisement by the Chamber of Skilled Trades and Crafts, denouncing elements of the advert as sexist.

The ad, inspired by the aesthetics of the Spanish crime drama La casa de papel ("Money Heist" in English), features five individuals, each holding an object representing a profession. The two women are depicted with a hairdryer and a whisk.

The CNFL's statement, titled "No to sexist ads," specifically targets this ad promoting the Master Craftsman's certificate training. The council argues that showing the only two women in the ad with a hairdryer and a whisk perpetuates gender stereotypes.

In contrast, the three men in the advertisement are shown holding a tablet and various tools, which the CNFL contends reinforces traditional masculine roles. The council advocates for non-stereotypical representations, emphasising the importance of presenting diverse role models for younger generations.

The CNFL points out that sexism is pervasive in advertising and reminds that it is an illegal act subject to sanctions. However, the council notes that few complaints are filed regarding discrimination in Luxembourg. In light of this, the CNFL urges the government to lodge a complaint with the Centre for Equal Treatment (CET) and the Ethics Commission for Advertising.
