The Watcher in space in What If...?-1

Summary

  • What If...? season 3 may be the final season, as it feels like the completion of a trilogy.
  • The show could end with the Watcher's death, potentially tying into Avengers: Secret Wars.
  • With new characters like the Fantastic Four and the X-Men joining the MCU soon, What If...? could have more opportunities for storytelling, which makes an ending surprising.

What If...? season 3 gets an update from an important Marvel Studios executive, and it seems like the Marvel Cinematic Universe's exploration of the multiverse will have some unexpected twists. While Marvel has teased a couple of stories from What If...? season 3 with a trailer and official stills around the end of What If...? season 2, the next year of the series still holds many mysteries. Now, Marvel has raised even more questions about the show's third season and its future.

On The Official Marvel Podcast, Marvel Studios' Head of Streaming, Brad Winderbaum, revealed that What If...? season 3 "feels like the completion of a trilogy." The executive also went on to tease that the next season of the animated series will use characters fans do not expect. Interestingly, after rumors that the animated series would end with season 3, Winderbaum has only made that more likely with his comments about the upcoming MCU TV show. Check out the full quote below:

"Feels like the completion of a trilogy. It goes beyond the first two seasons in its exploration of the multiverse, and it pulls in characters that are very unexpected, and has what I think is an extremely moving and fulfilling culmination for the Watcher."

Why What If...? Season 3 Could Be The Final Season Of The MCU Show

Connecting To The Wider MCU

Winderbaum talking about "the completion of a trilogy" and that What If...? season 3 is "an extremely moving and fulfilling culmination for the Watcher" sure makes it look like the next season of the animated series will mark the end of the show. That is shocking, as a multiverse series like What If...? could go on for as long as the MCU itself exists, as there will always be new alternate scenarios to be explored.

With the arrival of the Fantastic Four next year and the X-Men in Deadpool & Wolverine and soon in their own movie, What If...? would get even more characters and events to revisit. Based on Winderbaum's comment regarding the Watcher, perhaps the character's arc in What If...? season 3 could be what leads to the end of the show. Despite his name and role, the Watcher has intervened in both seasons of the series, and that could lead to another intervention that culminates in the Watcher's death in What If...? season 3.

Without Jeffrey Wright's Watcher, the Marvel series could come to an end, as there would be no one to guide audiences through the vast multiverse. What If...? season 3 could also potentially be the end of the series due to Marvel's movie slate. Avengers 5 releases in 2026, around when What If...? season 4 might have come out. Perhaps something happens to the multiverse or the Watcher in the movie that affects the animated series. With Avengers: Secret Wars then ending the Multiverse Saga, What If...?'s possible ending in season 3 could come in relation to that.

What If… ? is an animated anthology series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe which features fan-favorite characters, including Peggy Carter, T’Challa, Doctor Strange, Killmonger, Thor, and more. The new series, directed by Bryan Andrews with AC Bradley as head writer, features signature MCU action with a curious twist. The show sees Uatu the Watcher, an omnipotent being that observes the events of multiple universes from afar as they unfold, unable to interfere. However, things shift when an entity peers beyond the veil, jeopardizing the multiverse.
