The Ministry of Roads and Highways, through the Ghana Highways Authority, has unveiled plans to commence repair works on two critical bridges in the Greater Accra Region: the Kojo Ashong Bridge and the Afienya Steel Bridge.

These infrastructure upgrades are prompted by growing concerns over the deteriorating conditions of the bridges, which have led to significant traffic congestion and raised safety hazards for motorists and pedestrians alike. The upcoming repairs are part of a broader initiative to enhance road safety and optimise traffic flow across the region.

A video statement released by the Ghana Highways Authority and reported by Citi News on Saturday, July 6, highlighted the importance of these repair works in ensuring the structural integrity and longevity of both bridges.

According to the announcement, the Kojo Ashong Bridge is scheduled to be closed to traffic starting from midnight on July 6, 2024. Subsequently, the Afienya Steel Bridge will follow suit and be closed to traffic from midnight on Monday, July 15, 2024. The repair works for both bridges are expected to be completed within two weeks.

The Authority underscored its commitment to swiftly resolving the infrastructure challenges, with dedicated engineers and technical teams mobilised to execute the project efficiently.

Acknowledging the inconvenience that the closure of these vital routes may cause, the Authority appealed for public cooperation and patience during the repair period. They reassured the public that every effort would be made to minimise disruptions and restore normal traffic conditions as soon as possible.

“These repair works are critical to ensuring the safety and longevity of the Kojo Ashong and Afienya Steel bridges. The closure of the Kojo Ashong Bridge begins on July 6, 2024, at midnight, followed by the Afienya Steel Bridge on July 15, 2024, also at midnight. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we work diligently to complete these repairs and restore regular traffic flow,” the statement affirmed.
