In the interview, Obono-Obla disclosed that he and the former Chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, were removed from office for being “too stubborn” and actively fighting corruption. “Yes, I would say so. We didn’t do well. When Magu (former EFCC chairman) and I left, we didn’t hear anything again about fighting corruption. Both of us had a similar fate; we were stepping on toes and too stubborn. Malami’s close associate once told me, ‘you —Obla and Magu— are very stubborn,’” he stressed.

Obono-Obla was served a letter of immediate suspension from office in 2019 following an investigation by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). The investigation revealed that he had falsified his WAEC result to enroll at the University of Jos, where he studied law in the 1980s. Additionally, he was accused of attending the Nigerian Law School using fake high school records.

The revelations have sparked a wave of reactions from netizens, reigniting debates about corruption and accountability within Nigeria’s government institutions. Many are questioning the effectiveness of anti-corruption efforts and expressing concerns about the integrity of those in power.
