Peter Obi, a former presidential candidate, has blamed bad roads and insecurity for two fatal crashes that took place recently. The separate accidents, which took place in Enugu and Kogi states respectively, recorded 35 deaths, Obi claimed.

While the crash in Enugu claimed 16 lives, 19 casualties burned to death in the Kogi road mishap.

“Even though the cause of the accidents is yet unknown, it must not be unconnected with the bad conditions of roads and insecurities,” Obi affirmed.

He added: “This is why I continue to shout out that our meager resources should be channeled at priority areas of fixing our internal roads to make them passable before going for super highway projects, which will take the chunk of the resources meant for these essential areas.”

TheCornet reports that Obi’s conclusion on the cause of the crashes contradicted the assessment reports given by the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC.

Jonas Agwu, FRSC spokesperson, in a statement, attributed the Kogi accident to wrongful overtaking by one of the vehicles, leading to a head-on collision with the oncoming truck.

The Toyota Hiace bus loaded from Kano was on its lane on the highway when the Dangote truck driver, who drove from Port Harcourt wrongfully overtook a vehicle and collided head-on with the bus. The impact of the collision resulted in an inferno that burnt the victims to death.”

He added that two survivors from the accident were able to secure their lives by using “seatbelts”.
