Former Rep. Cedric Richmond (D-La.) said Vice President Harris is “increasing her role” in the campaign ahead of November’s election.

Richmond, co-chair of the Biden-Harris campaign, said Sunday on MSNBC’s “The Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart” that the vice president will be stepping up her involvement in the campaign. This comes as the campaign and the White House are still trying to quell concerns about President Biden’s ability to win a second term following a lackluster debate performance last month.

“She is increasing her role and she’s been a valued partner since day one. I won’t get into whether she’s been covered fairly by the press, but she is a valuable partner. She’s incredibly intelligent,” he said. “And I will just say she has not only publicly stated her support for President Biden, but she’s privately said that too.”

Harris has been walking a fine line as some people have suggested that she replace Biden at the top of the ticket. She has reiterated her support for Biden and has doubled down on his ability to serve a second term.

Richmond also said that California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) have also expressed their support for Biden following the debate. The two Democratic governors have been floated as possible replacements to Biden, but they have maintained their support for his reelection effort.

“I was with Gavin Newsom after the debate when he did the same, and Gretchen Whitmer was on the chairs call yesterday, and she reiterated her support,” Richmond said.

“Leaders are rallying around this president and vice president because they understand what’s at stake and they understand what they have accomplished,” he added.
