Cobh are just two points off the play-offs, thanks to just a third away victory all season

In the final minute of the 90, Jack Larkin struck a precious winner for Cobh Ramblers, which re-ignites their play-off push. The result leaves Treaty’s hopes in tatters, on a night where they gave debuts to Steven Healy and Trpimir Vrljicak.

Cobh are just two points off the play-offs, thanks to just a third away victory all season.

The first opening arrived on 11 minutes when Enda Curran saw a header cleared off the line by Luke Le Bervet, after the Galway native was found by Lee Devitt’s curled corner.

Minutes later, Tiernan O’Brien went close for the visitors, seeing his half-volley rebound clear off the crossbar. Mark Byrne was next to try his luck for Treaty, slicing a volley goalward after an string of United passes, but Darragh Burke was equal to it.

There was plenty to like about both sides at times, but the sense was that both were lacking that killer instinct.

Rams attacker Liam Kervick thought he’d opened the scoring on 23 minutes when = his precise low shot beat Corey Chambers, but captain Ben O’Riordan recovered to slide the ball off the line.

Devitt won a free-kick on the edge of the area, just before half-time. After initially hitting the wall, Yoyo Mahdy clipped a ball to the back post. Amid the scramble, Curran headed wide before clashing with Burke who was attempting to punch the ball clear.

The second-half that lacked real invention and openings. Sub Thomas Considine, awoke the 642 in attendance when attempting to unlock a stubborn Ramblers defence. First he drew a save from Burke, before almost finding Mahdy with a low cross. Matt McKevitt, also a sub, went close for Cobh, and his impact too a decent one for the Cork side.

In the end, a frantic final 10 minutes was met with a goal. Larkin raced onto a low right-wing cross, expertly keeping his shot along the Garryowen grass to win this contest.
