Darren Bent suggests £50m Chelsea player isn’t good enough to start for a top six team

Since being taken over by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, Chelsea have really splashed the cash on transfers.

For example, their first transfer window saw them spend £50m on Raheem Sterling and more than £60m on Marc Cucurella.

A year later, Chelsea broke their transfer record for a second time under Todd Boehly and Clearlake, spending £115m on Moises Caicedo.

However, the team have still struggled this season and could miss out on European football once again.

Some are now questioning whether Chelsea’s acquisitions are actually top six quality.

Darren Bent does not think Chelsea star would start at top six team

After spending so much money on transfers, Chelsea may have to sell some players in the summer to balance things out.

If Sterling becomes someone who the club are willing to let go, Darren Bent thinks he may have to settle for a team outside of the top six.

Speaking about the winger on talkSPORT, the former Premier League striker said: “West Ham would take him I think, but then they’ve got [Mohammed] Kudus and [Jarrod] Bowen. So I’m looking, where does he start? What level does he go in and start straight away?

“Wolves maybe on the left potentially he would start, but I’m not disrespecting Wolves here, they’ve got some good players.”

Bent was then asked if Sterling’s days as a starter at a top six side are over. He said in response: “I wouldn’t say his days are gone, but right now, I can’t see that happening.”

Is Raheem Sterling good enough to start for Chelsea?

Right now, yes, because the Blues look nothing like a top six team.

As well as that, Mauricio Pochettino‘s other option for the left flank, Mykhailo Mudryk, still looks way too raw.

Joe Cole has suggested that Mudryk could yet prove to be a better signing than someone like Arsenal’s Leandro Trossard, but the signs are just not there.

In truth, Mudryk has disappointed at Chelsea, especially considering that he is their fourth most expensive signing in history.

As of today, then, looking at their current options, Sterling can start in this Chelsea team.
