A city centre street has been cordoned off by fire crews following a blaze, with gas and electricity services still on the scene.

Firefighters rushed to Redhill Street in Ancoats at around 6:50am on Thursday morning (May 16) following reports of a fire 'involving underground cables'.

Redhill Street and neighbouring Bengal Street were taped off as crews worked to bring the fire under control and make the area safe. A cordon remains in place, but fire services have now left the scene.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Shortly before 6.50am today (Thursday 16 May), two fire engines from Manchester Central and Blackley fire stations were called to reports of a fire involving underground cables on Redhill Street, Manchester.

“Crews arrived quickly and set-up a cordon to extinguish the fire. Firefighters worked alongside Electricity North West and Cadent Gas to make the area safe and were in attendance for around two hours.”
