Benson Omala: Gor Mahia Striker Fights to Prevent Consecutive Golden Boot Disappointments

Gor Mahia forward Benson Omala is far from comfortable in the race for the Golden Boot as his rivals close in with six games left in the season. Even after scoring twice last weekend, Omala’s fight for the FKF Premier League Golden Boot remains fierce.

Omala’s latest performance, which included two goals in Gor Mahia’s 3-2 victory over Murang’a Seal, brings his total to 14 goals, putting him just one ahead of Kenya Police striker Tito Okello.

Although Omala has not replicated his performance from last season when he tied the record with 26 goals, achieving 25 by May, he remains a contender for his first Golden Boot after narrowly missing it in the 2022-23 season to Elvis Rupia, who set a new record with 27 goals. With Okello, another Police player, close behind him once more, Omala is determined to avoid a repeat of last year’s disappointment.

Okello proved his worth by scoring the equalizer in his team’s 2-1 comeback win against Kakamega Homeboyz on Sunday, contributing to his five goals in the last four league matches, which include two braces against Sofapaka and FC Talanta.

This situation means Omala cannot afford to become complacent if he wishes to end the season both as the top scorer and a league champion, with Gor Mahia on track to secure the league title for a second consecutive season.

Meanwhile, Tusker’s Erick Kapaito is also in the chase with 10 goals so far, though he didn’t add to his tally in Tusker’s recent win over Nzoia Sugar. With Gor Mahia’s Austin Odhiambo and Francis Kahiro of Bandari each scoring nine goals to date, the competition remains tight.

Vincent Owino of Nairobi City Stars, with seven goals, is another contender hoping to advance in the goal-scoring race in his upcoming match against Ulinzi Stars.
